Rectify
Rectify is one of the most throughful, powerful shows on television, and it deserves so much more attention than it gets. Aden Young as Daniel Holden consistently delivers incredible performances, along with all of the other actors on the show. It truly is a buried treasure.
Better Call Saul
Jonathan Banks, AKA Mike from Better Call Saul. He is a master of understated emotion. He can do more with an eyebrow raise, a disgusted sigh, or a grunt than most actors can do in years of work.
Chicago Med
I really got sold on Colin Donnell this season. I loved what he was able to do on Chicago Med, and then when I went back and watched his work on Arrow and The Affair I was dumbfounded. I actually feel guilty that I didn’t know who this guy was until now.
Agents of SHIELD
It blows my mind how Agents of SHIELD is constantly overlooked in the Stunt Coordination category of the Emmys. The fight scenes are stellar, and I don’t understand how they don’t get nominations for that amazing work.
Bates Motel
Bates Motel is consistently overlooked and it’s a shame. Vera Farmiga and Freddie Highmore knock every scene out of the park. Season 4 was perfection from start to finish, and despite knowing how this story was going to play out, the (SPOILER ALERT) death of Norma still came as an emotional shock.
Younger
Younger is an extremely smarrt comedy with some very talented people on board, so it surprises me nobody has taken note. Miriam Shor is probably one of the funniest women in the business, and her delivery should definitely be recognized. The story has gotten quite complex, and the innuendos can be out of this world. Where is the love??
Halt and Catch Fire
Halt and Catch Fire is so consistently good that it can take my breath away. AMC has steadfastly supported the series through the low ratings, but the real shame here is that nobody on the awards circuit has ever bucked the trend to acknowledge the talent that makes it so worthy of the full four season arc. The writing, the acting and the overall product are as good or better than many shows showered with awards love. It’s inexplicable.
Major Crimes
Major Crimes does well in the ratings and is a staple for TNT but Major Crimes doesn’t get a lot of buzz, even though it’s wonderful. Every crime is intriguing, plus it has one of the best teams on TV. Each member is different, yet completely dedicated to the job. There isn’t one throw away character on the board. And last season’s storyline where Dr. Joe was shot by a white supremacist in the middle of the courtroom had me riveted to the screen. It’s a show I can’t get enough of and I’m always surprised that more people aren’t talking about it.
You’re the Worst
You’re the Worst consistently wonderful. It’s smart, witty, and funny in the darkest of ways. The show itself deserves way more attention than it gets, and so do the actors.
Pitch
Pitch is SO good. Not only is it an amazing story about breaking gender barriers in baseball, but it’s about so much more. Kylie Bunbury is a talented rising star, Mark-Paul Gosselaar gives the performance of his career, and the cast is incredibly diverse and blessed with sharp writing. How are more people NOT watching this show and talking about it? I’m baffled that so many have missed out on watching something that’s so desperately needed on television.
Supernatural
I don’t understand why awards shows don’t recognize Supernatural, or at the very least, the show’s talented lead actors, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki. They’ve been on the air for 12 seasons for a reason – these guys have been channeling Dean and Sam Winchester flawlessly for years. It’s a shame that the fancy-schmancy awards shows don’t take the series seriously – they’re really the ones missing out.
Penny Dreadful
Penny Dreadful (and particularly Eva Green) was easily the most-snubbed show in recent memory (since Hannibal, at least). The show was artful and visually stunning, the performances (particularly Green’s as main character Vanessa Ives) were incredible, and it was just all-around epic. Sure the surprise series finale was a little (OK, a lot) unsatisfying, but this show should have been racking up tons of awards in the performer and direction categories.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Andre Braugher gets most of the (absolutely deserved) attention as supporting actor on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, but I wish people would also pay attention to Joe Lo Truglio. The man is incredible as Charles Boyle. He brings it every single week with a level of energy and enthusiasm that I cannot even comprehend. With Charles’ effusive sincerity and joyfulness, his almost-creepy loyalty to Jake, his constant inappropriate and awkward intensity, and his on-point physical humour, Lo Truglio is an absolute delight to watch and to laugh at every week.
Quarry
Logan Marshall-Green put his heart and soul into his powerful portrayal of Mac “Quarry” Conway in the phenomenal Cinemax series, Quarry. There has never been a character I’ve had such a love/hate relationship with like I did with Mac. Watching him fall into the dark hole that became his life, but then climb out again after he finally accepted all that The Broker had to offer was mesmerizing. I’ll never forget that smile of satisfaction on his face after he blew up the bus. It was perfect, just like Marshall-Green’s amazing performance.
Shameless
Ruby Modine as Sierra on Shameless. It’s so good when guest stars become one of the best people on the show, and that’s what happened with Sierra this year on Shameless. The acting from Ruby has been nothing short of first class. Can she be a regular for Season 8?
