Talk of divorce, memory loss, and half-assed weddings weren’t things that left us with the warm and fuzzies when some series came to a close.
We created a slideshow below of 17 endgame ‘ships we love — with endings that we hate.
Stiles and Lydia – Teen Wolf
For six agonizing seasons, fans waited for Stiles and Lydia to finally admit their feelings for each other. Once they finally got together, Dylan O’Brien left the show and returned only for the series finale. Their kiss wasn’t as satisfying as it could have been, and viewers didn’t get to experience them as a real couple.
Mac and Harm – JAG/NCIS: Los Angeles
The entire series of JAG was one big will they/won’t they for these two with plenty of ship teases that didn’t go anywhere. Mac and Harm finally got together and ended up married in the series finale, only to bring them back in NCIS: Los Angeles for fans to discover that their marriage was over. It was teased that they might be reunited in the future, but after all this time, why bother?
Kurt and Blaine – Glee
Kurt and Blaine were an iconic couple who was very easy to love. However, when it was revealed that Blaine cheated on Kurt, it changed everything. The two did end up getting married, but the relationship felt tainted after Blaine’s infidelity.
Doug and Carrie – King of Queens
King of Queens was a comedy about Doug and Carrie’s married life. They decided to get a divorce right before they’re notified that they could adopt a baby from Beijing. Doug and Carrie wound up racing each other to China to claim their child, but eventually realized they were being stupid. They remained married and even had another baby together, but there was way too much unnecessary drama.
Chloe and Alek – The Nine Lives of Chloe King
When The Nine Lives of Chloe King got canceled, Chloe was torn between Brian and Alek. The writers wrote a movie script to serve as an end to the series, but the network decided not to produce it. The script was posted online to give fans a sense of closure, and Chloe realized she was in love with Alek. The only problem is that we never got to see their beautiful ending.
Jace and Clary – Shadowhunters
In the series finale, Clary lost all her memories of the Shadow World, which included falling in love with Jace. It was implied in the show’s final moments that Jace and Clary would wind up together again, but it was too open-ended for our liking.
Jim and Pam – The Office
The Office may have ended years ago, but Jim and Pam are still one of the world’s favorite couples. Although they did end up together, they had it rough in the final season and even considered getting divorced. After the show continuously pushed their love and soulmate status, it felt like an unnecessary obstacle.
Beckett and Castle – Castle
Instead of a lavish wedding with family and friends, viewers got a patched together, green-screened few minutes at the end of an episode. The final season forced fans to watch the couple break up and lie for a convoluted conspiracy. Castle and Beckett’s 30-second-long happy ending was a lame way to end a series that was supposed to be a fun love story.
Chuck and Sarah – Chuck
After nearly five seasons of buildup, Sarah lost all of her memories of Chuck. The series finale provided some closure by implying that Sarah would fall in love with Chuck all over again, but it still didn’t sit right as an ending.
Emily and Alison – Pretty Little Liars
Emily and Alison did end up together at the end of Pretty Little Liars, but the same can’t be said about the show’s spinoff. Since Emily wasn’t on the new series, divorce was used to explain her absence. The Perfectionists is a fun addition to the world, but we’d rather have our Emison endgame.
Belle and Rumpelstiltskin – Once Upon a Time
Belle and Rumple’s ending was almost as complicated as their relationship. The couple spent their last days secluded in another realm, and Rumple decided to die so they could be together. They did find each other in the afterlife, but a lot of fans were upset with how it was handled.
Luke and Lorelai – Gilmore Girls
When Gilmore Girls ended, Luke and Lorelai got a last-minute reconciliation. The revival gave fans a wedding, but it didn’t provide a resolution to all of their previous issues. There’s no way their problems just disappeared, and it never should have taken them so long to get married in the first place.
Damon and Elena – The Vampire Diaries
Nina Dobrev left the show before the final season, but Elena returned for the final few minutes of The Vampire Diaries series finale. All the chemistry that had made Damon and Elena so great seemed to evaporate in that short amount of time, and we wish we would have seen more than just a glimpse of the wedding ring on Elena’s hand.
Simon and Isabelle – Shadowhunters
Everything about Simon and Isabelle’s ending was perfect except that it was thrown together at the speed of light. Shadowhunters’ cancellation backed the show into a corner and their relationship was rushed in the series finale. In a perfect world, we would have more time to witness Sizzy’s perfection.
Ted and Robin – How I Met Your Mother
The series flat-out told viewers that Robin wasn’t the mother of Ted’s children. It felt a bit deceiving to later reveal that the mother had been dead all along and that the story was about Ted’s best friend, instead. Contrary to what the majority of viewers believe, we think Ted and Robin were perfect for each other. Ted appearing on her front steps with the blue French horn was cute, but the ending still left a lot unsaid between them.
Jack and Amanda – Revenge
There were many mixed opinions about Jack and Amanda’s ending on Revenge. A lot of fans felt that Jack and Amanda’s love scene was underwhelming and not worth the wait. Others thought it was a perfect way to say goodbye to the show. We’re somewhere in the middle.
Nick and Jess – New Girl
Nick and Jess had broken midway through New Girl, and they didn’t get back together until the final seconds of the Season 6 finale. The ending didn’t feel like a proper one, so New Girl returned for a short seventh season.
The show picked up after a significant time jump, revealing that Nick and Jess were still together years later but never got married. When they did get married, their wedding got derailed and they wound up having a very short, anti-climactic ceremony in a hospital without reciting any vows.
