As the song says, when you’re accidentally in love there’s no escaping it. Some people are polar opposites, others are too alike, and some just outright hate each other.
But whatever the reason may be for their differences, there are many characters on television who fall for the person that they would least expect. These relationships keep the audience on the edge of their seat and make for some of the most entertaining (and ironic) romances on television.
Below is a slideshow featuring 31 couples who accidentally fell in love with each other.
Lucifer and Chloe – Lucifer It’s safe to say that Lucifer and Chloe didn’t fall in love on purpose. But after going through what these two have, it’s insane that they didn’t get together sooner.
Clarke and Lexa – The 100 Considering they started off as leaders on opposite sides of a war, it was definitely an accident that Clarke and Lexa fell for each other. But you can’t help who you love. With much to learn from one another, their relationship ended up changing both Clarke and Lexa for the better.
April and Jackson – Grey’s Anatomy Jackson and April were friends for seasons before anything actually happened between them. Jackson was always protective of April but it wasn’t until later in the show that they realized they were a lot more than friends.
Jackie and Steven – That ’70s Show Jackie and Steven are a couple that deserved better. Their relationship was an unexpected surprise and despite their bickering, they were just right for each other.
Logan and Veronica – Veronica Mars Logan and Veronica are another example of a couple who went from hate to love. Although they didn’t like each other at first, they ended up falling head over heels for one another.
Barney and Robin – How I Met Your Mother Robin was in love with Barney’s best friend and Barney was the type of guy who hated relationships. In fact, he hated them so much he even made a video for his friends begging them to get him out of any future relationship he may be in. But for some reason when Barney and Robin fell for each other, it made perfect sense.
Emma and Ethan – The Lying Game Emma was originally just supposed to take her twin’s place for a few days, but Sutton’s boyfriend Ethan knew that something was up. When Sutton ended up staying away longer than expected, Emma and Ethan ended up falling in love.
Jane and Pinstripe – The Bold Type What started out as a “no strings attached” fling when Pinstripe (who doesn’t do relationships) fell for Jane. Hard. In fact, he fell so hard he even offered to pay a fortune to freeze her eggs for her.
Pacey and Joey – Dawson’s Creek It’s hard to believe that “accidentally in love” wasn’t written after Pacey and Joey. But as their relationship proves, the best things in life never come easy.
Monica and Chandler – F. R. I. E. N. D. S. Monica and Chandler were there for each other throughout all the ups and downs of life. They even supported one another when it came to breakups and romantic hardships. It took quite a few seasons, but Monica and Chandler eventually realized that what they were looking for had been in front of them the entire time.
Cheryl and Toni – Riverdale Although we all hoped for it from day one, we weren’t actually sure if Riverdale would turn Choni into a reality. These two seemingly came from very different places and did not get off on the best foot. However, they easily have become the best and healthiest relationship on the show and we couldn’t be happier that Cheryl and Toni found each other.
Stephanie and Jimmy – Fuller House Who would’ve thought that Stephanie Tanner would’ve fallen for Kimmy’s brother? Although Stephanie and Kimmy have a better relationship in Fuller House, we can’t help but wonder what their reaction would be to Steph and Jimmy’s relationship in the original sitcom.
Spencer and Caleb – Pretty Little Liars This romance came as a shock to many viewers, considering their past flames but Caleb and Spencer were too cute not to love. Sometimes, we wish they didn’t break up for the sake of their former relationships.
Izzie and Casey – Atypical Izzie and Casey went from enemies to friends in a very short amount of time, but they didn’t stop there. It’s obvious that somewhere between hating and liking each other, these two started to fall in love.
Brandon and Callie – The Fosters Brandon and Callie are the actual definition of this trope. Considering that Callie was going to be adopted into their family, these two did not mean to fall for each other. But we can’t control who we love, no matter how much pain it causes.
Aram and Samar – The Blacklist We couldn’t be more thankful that this amazing duo ended up falling for each other. Love comes when you least expect it, and Aram and Samar are no exception.
Dan and Blair – Gossip Girl Whether they were fighting over staplers, internships, or Dan’s wardrobe, it’s safe to say that Dan and Blair did not get along for the first half of Gossip Girl. Although it may have taken some time, the two realized that they had more in common than meets the eye and brought the show to a whole new level with their rom-com type of relationship.
Jason and Janet – The Good Place A computer falling in love with a human is a lot more romantic than it sounds. While Janet’s feelings for Jason caused a lot of things to go wrong in the “bad good place” it also caused a lot of things to go right.
Nick and Jess – New Girl Nick and Jess were best friends and roommates for the first two seasons of New Girl. But it soon became obvious that Nick had fallen for Jess, and despite their obvious differences, she couldn’t help but fall for him right back.
Alec and Magnus – Shadowhunters The High Warlock of Brooklyn falling for the head of the Institue was sure to cause some commotion. Magnus and Alec both have very different responsibilities that threaten their relationship every day. But these two love each other too much to let anything come between them. It’s obvious that there’s nothing supernatural or not that could keep them apart.
(John Medland/Freeform) Rick and Michonne – The Walking Dead After starting off on the wrong foot, no one expected these two to get together. When a strong friendship between them was formed, it seemed like that was as far as the show would take their relationship. But after seasons of partnership, Rick and Michonne finally took it to the next level.
(© 2016 AMC Film Holdings LLC. All Rights Reserved.) Booth and Bones – Bones It took seasons for Booth and Bones to finally get their act together and realize they were in love with each other. While they may not have seen it coming, we definitely did.
Haley and Andy – Modern Family Their clashing personalities made it hard to believe that these two would fall for each other. But when it comes to Haley and Andy, it seems like opposites really do attract.
Jeff and Annie – Community Jeff and Annie started off the show clashing on almost everything. But no matter how much they tried to deny it, there was no stopping Jeff and Annie’s eventual romance.
Scott and Malia – Teen Wolf Scalia was a pair that no one saw coming (especially not them). Considering they previously dated each other’s best friends, it came as a surprise when the two fell for each other. Despite their past relationships, Scott and Malia ended up becoming an adorable couple and one of the highlights of Teen Wolf’s final season.
Jake and Amy – Brooklyn Nine-Nine From the very first episode, Jake and Amy were always in competition with one another. When Jaking jokingly made her promise she wouldn’t fall in love with him, she assured him it wouldn’t be a problem. From that moment on, we knew it was inevitable.
Jamie and Claire – Outlander Arranged marriages don’t always work out, but this one sure did. Despite having an actual husband back in her own time period, Claire fell in love with Jamie instead.
(© 2014 Sony Pictures Television/Neil Davidson) Hook and Emma – Once Upon a Time While these two started the show as enemies, they had a lot more in common than one would think. No one expected the savior and Captain Hook to fall for each other, but the ended up becoming one of the best parts of Once Upon a Time.
Bay and Emmett – Switched at Birth Everyone thought the main romance of the show was going to be between Daphne and her best friend Emmett. But Emmett ended up falling in love with Bay even though she didn’t even know sign language at the time.
Andy and April – Parks and Recreation Andy and April are interesting individuals who somehow became even better together. These two show that you never know who could turn out to be your perfect match.
Joey and Rachel – F. R. I. E. N. D. S. No one saw Rachel and Joey coming. In fact, they were friends for 8 years while Rachel had an on and off relationship with Ross. As they grew closer throughout the series, Joey and Rachel realized they liked each other as more than friends. Although they didn’t end up together (and yes we’re still bitter) Joey and Rachel turned out to be one of the best relationships on the show.
