There are plenty of tropes that make interactions between characters, and couples, stand out to us. A good height difference isn’t an official one, but maybe we should make it one?
A good height difference almost determines how much a couple will stay with us, how much it will stand out, and how much promise they can have down the road.
Every iconic couple on television had some kind of considerable differences when side by side, and isn’t that what it is all about?
Here are a few examples of aesthetically pleasing pairings that make you want to see them together, and who make anything more memorable because of their height difference.
Bellamy and Clarke – The 100 Where does one even begin with Bellamy and Clarke? This two aren’t just partners or best friends or soulmates. But they are also all of that, wrapped up in this one relationship that you get to watch unfold while Bellamy stands tall(er) than but always right next to Clarke. No matter what they face, be it the end of the world or the prolonged stagnant plot of a current season, it is the way they interact with each other that keeps you unable to look away.
Alex and Maggie – Supergirl Alex and Maggie may not have ended up together (yet) but on screen, they were pure magic. They worked in a perfect way and their height difference was just a cherry on top of the beautiful sundae.
Joyce and Hopper – Stranger Things The best thing about a couple can be that first hug, which is where Joyce and Hopper come in because they mastered that a while ago. Their considerable height difference only adds to how nice it is to watch them interact together.
(Netflix) Tommy and Lindy – Eye Candy These two left us too soon, but that doesn’t mean they weren’t epic together. Tommy and Lindy were an underrated pairing that spent their days solving cyber crimes and giving heart eyes to each other. The fact that they also looked aesthetically pleasing next to one another was just a great height coincidence, right?
Stiles and Lydia – Teen Wolf It was clear that Stiles and Lydia were always meant to be endgame by the way they perfectly fit together.
Teresa and James – Queen of the South It would be shocking if you haven’t heard of Teresa and James already, they have quickly managed to steal fan’s hearts with their chemistry. And their height difference just adds to how easy it is to appreciate them.
Tyrone and Tandy – Cloak and Dagger These two are meant to be in every possible way, but there is also that aesthetic aspect that makes it exciting to watch them side by side. They look good together, with Tandy looking up at Tyrone and making us believe in love again.
Michael and Ash – Star Trek Discovery A dance is not the first example that comes to mind when highlighting the benefits of two people having a significant difference when side by side, but Michael and Ash are there to remind us of it. That shift in a relationship allows for more electric charged moments, for the characters and the fans.
Waverly and Nicole – Wynonna Earp Waverly and Haught are the definition of precious together, so it is almost unfair how good they look together on top of that. Purgatory has truly never looked so good.
Barry and Iris – The Flash There is a reason these two are happily married and continue to be the epitome of a soulmate couple. Look at them, they fit so well together and their height difference is what makes us believe in this theory in the first place.
Jim and Pam – The Office Jim and Pam were soulmates if you believe in that sort of thing, and the way they Jim looked down at Pam with so much love all the time sealed the deal.
Oliver and Felicity – Arrow Forehead kisses are another underrated moment between couples, it is another way to demonstrate intimacy and do you know what makes it look good? A height difference!
(Jack Rowand/The CW) Sweet Pea and Toni – Riverdale Height differences don’t have to be between a romantic couple for them to be all kinds of epic. Just look at the way Sweet Pea towers over Toni, and yet you want both of them on your side during a fight. Also everyone loves and wants to protect Toni, and this is exactly where Sweet Pea comes in for that.
Tahani and Eleanor – The Good Place In another universe, Tahani and Eleanor are living happily in the good place as soulmates, while we wish for that scenario to play out for us on screen though we get to enjoy watching these two hang out regardless. Try to look away from these two and all their romantic potential, I dare you.
Jasper and Eleanor – The Royals Both Jasper and Eleanor gave as good as they got, so losing them and their well-positioned height difference still hurts. They were too appealing visually to just leave us this quickly.
Lucifer and Chloe – Lucifer Lucifer and Chloe have a great back and forth while they are trying to solve crimes together, and watching this smol and tall dynamic do it gets better with each season.
Jane and Rafael – Jane the Virgin Another great part of watching a couple fall in love on our TVs comes down to this kisses that get their own sequence each time. With Jane and Rafael, the fact that Jane is shorter only adds to the cinematic feeling that comes from watching them kiss.
Kane and Abby – The 100 What is that saying about a good height difference working between a shorter half that is ready to fight everyone and a taller counterpart that holds them back? Are Kane and Abby the embodiment of that?
Zoe and Wade – Hart of Dixie These two crossed off almost every romantic trope in the book, why not include an epic height difference in there as well? Zoe and Wade’s fighting and jealousy and banter and angst made their eventual endgame status that much more sweet.
Buffy and Faith – Buffy the Vampire Slayer Buffy and Faith had so much potential romantically for fans because of the chemistry but also the way that they could square off by each other’s side. Looking at moments like these are promising because once again that aesthetic just doesn’t quit.
Brienne and Tormund – Game of Thrones Get yourself someone who looks at you like Tormund looks at Brienne, and a height difference might help make that more memorable too.
Nick and Jess – New Girl Fighting is a new addition to the fan-favorite part of a couple on TV. When two people disagree consistently, almost always there is a layer of tension that goes beyond frustration. Nick and Jess with all their previous sexual tension couldn’t have gotten as far as they did if not for their height difference.
Jackson and April – Grey’s Anatomy These two ended up together and happy, there is no other explanation. I mean, have you seen these two together?
Rory and Dean – Gilmore Girls This must come as a surprise, especially with the love triangle that Rory found herself in but hear me out. Dean is too much of a tall to not be added here.
Klaus and Caroline – The Vampire Diaries There’s nothing like a good height difference to even out years of almosts and empty promises that ended with a disappointing finale. But hey, at least Klaus and Caroline got an almost kiss or two out of it first.
(Unavailable) Wynonna and Dolls – Wynonna Earp As a group we obviously all refused the narrative of Dolls no longer being in our lives, or Wynonna’s. But because canon is still not catching up to our request, let’s just take a second to appreciate these two together.
Anne and Gilbert – Anne with an E It’s a couple that people find themselves shipping through different adaptions and years, no matter what Anne and Gilbert slowly growing up and realizing what they mean to each other is poetic almost. These two are also an example of that hilarious pair where the tall person is soft and the short person is fiery, is there any couple more fit for this role?
(CBC/Netflix) Mike and Eleven – Stranger Things Young love is a sweet thing to watch, especially on a show like Stranger Things when something dark is at every turn. Mike and Eleven are the kids that deserve a great memory of their first dance. And the way that Mike is just a little bit taller helps craft those awkward emotions that come up when these two see each other.
Simone and Martin – The Rain A scene filled with happiness and smiles isn’t exactly how The Rain would sell itself, which is why Simone and Martin managing to sneak that in was a lovely surprise.
Morello and Nicky – Orange is the New Black Wishing for a happily ever after in prison is hard to justify, but Nicky and Morello keep us going somehow.
James and Naomi – The Expanse The best kisses come from a height difference, that is a fact and you can quote me on it too! James and Naomi prove just that on The Expanse, and we are even luckier for it.
Nathan and Haley – One Tree Hill These two have an iconic height difference, one that many fans still find comfort in all this time later.
Holmes and Watson – Elementary Not all good height differences rely on romance, Holmes and Watson are another example of that. Their friendship is accented well by it though, it is almost a relief watching them together.
Sara and Ava – Legends of Tomorrow Classy and aesthetically pleasing, what more could one ask for? I’m just saying, Sara and Ava are what we all wish we could be.
Jane and Ryan – The Bold Type Jane and Ryan may not work as a couple, but they definitely check off that nice height difference box when considering a possible romance.
Danny and Riley – Baby Daddy Danny was the tallest guy on the show and yet he was the softest one too. His relationship with Riley was so pure and loving, the only thing that made it more of a dream come true was watching Danny look down at his childhood crush with so much awe and appreciation.
Mulder and Scully – The X- Files The only reason waiting for Mulder and Scully felt so promising was because when you saw them together nothing else made sense. How could these two not be destined to be together? Their partnership transcended just friends or only a lingering romance, similar to another couple currently on TV right about now.
Jonah and Amy – Superstore This exchange speaks for itself, doesn’t it? Jonah and Amy squaring off adds so much tension and sparks, their considerable height difference helps make that even more hilarious.
Jake and Amy – Brooklyn Nine Nine I’m not saying that a nice height difference means a happily ever after but I’m not not saying that. Make of that what you will, but Jake and Amy stole our hearts and watching them together makes everything more adorable.
Ruby and Olivia – On My Block This is a true smol and tall, nothing beats these two when they are near one another.
