Sometimes it’s due to a lack of chemistry between the actors. In other instances, it’s due to an unnecessary turn of events. And once in a while, you simply can’t put your finger on it.

I don’t think Michael and Maria (Roswell New Mexico) were a solid couple who were set up to succeed. In the Season 1 finale, just before choosing to start a relationship with Maria to move on, Michael confesses to his “sister” that he loves Alex. He says “He’s tangled up in all these terrible memories in my life, and… I love him. I probably always will. But lately that love just hurts.” Getting involved with someone while still loving someone else (your ex) rarely ends well, and that’s what happens to Michael. Throughout season 2, the TV series shows that despite his relationship with Maria, Michael’s feelings for Alex persist. In the last two episodes, Maria finally realizes the importance of Michael’s feelings for Alex after he risks his life to protect him (on 2 occasions) and breaks with Michael, telling him “I just think that we should leave it be, before I wonder if someone else could make you happier.” That means she’s realized she’s not number 1 in his heart. The writers didn’t write them to last as a couple. Maria and Michael’s relationship was in “let’s see if this thing between us can work” mode. By pairing Michael with Maria while he still had feelings for Alex (who is still present in his life), their relationship was already off to a bad start and the end was only a matter of time before Maria discovered the truth. Michael continued to choose Maria over and over again to move on and forget his feelings for Alex, but it didn’t work, his feelings for Alex didn’t disappear.
