Kelly's body is discovered and the police believe that one of the people keeping vigil outside her home is the killer. Ben convinces Michaela to take him with her to the crime scene, and they find out that the only item missing from the home is a gold necklace Kelly was wearing. Before they are able to get any more information about the killing out of the lead detective, Deputy Director Vance shows up and outs them as fellow 828 survivors. The NSA's involvement doesn't deter the Stone siblings, and they talk to the husband before leaving and then return to ask more questions later. After enlisting Jared's help, they figure out that before she was killed, Kelly had headed to one of the properties that she and her husband owned and came back bruised. They go to check out the "mall," but the first person they try to question flees. They finally catch up to her and it's revealed that Kelly's husband was extorting his renters — he only leased to illegal immigrants and then threatened to call ICE if they didn't give him a cut of their profits. He's arrested, but he still has an alibi for the time of his wife's murder. Michaela visits the suspect in custody — he was found at the scene of the crime covered in blood, but he didn't have a weapon or Kelly's necklace on him. He's obsessed with the 828 passengers and doesn't seem to mind the possibility of going to jail for a crime he didn't commit. He quotes the gospel to Michaela, which prompts her to return to her friend Evie's parent's house despite a chilly reception earlier. When she arrives, Evie's dad is upset because his wife, who has developed dementia, has gone missing. Despite his anger with Michaela, he gives her his car keys and asks her to go looking for his wife. After driving around for a few minutes, she finds her friend's mother wandering in the middle of the street. She abruptly pulls her car in front of the woman to prevent her from being struck by an oncoming SUV. The SUV hits a light pole and Michaela goes to check on the driver. To her surprise, it's Kelly's housekeeper, and Kelly's necklace has spilled out of her bag. The housekeeper had developed a bit of an obsession with the husband while Kelly was missing and resented her return. Jared is suspicious about Michaela's solving another case through sheer coincidence and contemplates informing on her behavior to Vance as he requested. He finally tears up the business card, asserting his allegiance to his ex-girlfriend.
Ben struggles with the idea of Grace being with another man and with Olive's dating life. The attack on Kelly also has the whole family on edge. Cal is upset to find out that Olive is dating his old best friend, and rats her out to the parents for sneaking out. Even though she's mad at him, his pondering on how they can still be twins when she's five years older than him now makes her reach out and reassure him about their bond.
Saanvi discovers a new protein in Cal's bloodwork and researches to try and discover if it was caused by something given to them by the government upon their return or some kind of a side effect of their disappearance. She runs tests on herself as a comparison and finds that they share symptoms in common with ischemic strokes. She eventually posits that the proteins and other test results could have occurred from the passengers being put in a state near death and then being suddenly reawoken. She wants to test her theory by looking at a sample of brain tissue, but the only available source is Kelly's corpse, which seems to have disappeared. Saanvi, Ben, and Michaela are more determined than ever to find answers about what happened to them.
