Preacher Season 3 Episode 1 Review: Angelville

Critic's Rating: 4 / 5.0

On Preacher Season 3 Episode 1, Jesse and Cassidy rush to Angelville to ask Grandma to bring Tulip back from the dead. It feels like a close call because Tulip is sitting in purgatory with herself as a child, waiting for death to literally come knocking at the door.

The People He Fears - Preacher
(AMC)

Angelville is a creepy little town, and I was surprised to find out Grandma killed Jesse's mom (her daughter,) and Jody killed Jesse's father.

No wonder he never wanted to go back!

Let's talk about Grandma. She runs all of Angelville, and it appears she always has.

TC: Sew her up now, Miss Marie?

Grandma: No. Strap her in the machine.

🔗 permalink: No. Strap her in the machine.

If she's brutal enough to cut open her own daughter's throat and kill her, imagine what she could do to Jesse.

The woman doesn't know love.

I'm afraid of this price Jesse has to pay to his Grandma for Tulip's life. It could be that he has to stay in Angelville. Maybe it's an unspoken communication between the two that she owns his soul. We don't know yet.

Jesse doesn't want to be there or around any of them. That much we do know, but he seems to be stuck there now.

If he's not stuck there, Grandma owns his soul. What's that going to mean for his search for God?

Tulip just saw God, though, and was told she was chosen. She needs to tell Jesse about that encounter, but considering Preacher Season 2, I don't think she will.

If you remember, the last half of the season, Tulip and Cassidy were done with the search for God. Tulp felt Jesse was choosing the search for God over her and at the expense of all their lives.

She wasn't wrong about that.

If Tulip tells Jesse she saw God, he's going to run right back to the chase, and they'll be right where they were before Tulip died.

Tulip's IS wrong about that!

I don't see Jesse choosing anything over Tulip ever again. He spilled his heart out to her, and I have no doubt he meant every word.

They are in Angelville, which doesn't seem like the safest place to be, so they need to get away from these people.

Jesse: Bullshit. She’ll come back. She has to come back.

Grandma seems to be the kind of person to cause trouble, so when she offered to give Cassidy anything he asked for, and he glanced at Tulip, I was a little worried.

For all we know, Cassidy could've asked Grandma to put a spell on Tulip to love him instead of Jesse.

Did you see the way she looked at him when she came back?

Tulip: No. No. No! I need more time!

🔗 permalink: No. No. No! I need more time!

It makes me believe that's exactly what he did. If that's the case, I'm not going to be a happy camper.

Don't get me wrong. I adore Cassidy. He's funny, a loyal friend, and a great character, but he doesn't belong with Tulip.

Jesse belongs with Tulip. They have always belonged together. That's just the way it is, and I can't think of two other people more suited for each other than them.

I'm curious to find out what led to Jesse's father's death.

We found out what led to his mother's death. She was some kind of prisoner on Grandma's land, unable to leave for any reason. She died trying to leave.

Was Jesse's father killed for the same reason?

From the looks of it, Jesse's mom was murdered when Jesse was a baby, but his father was murdered by Jody when Jesse was a pre-teen.

Jesse: What happened?

Cassidy: You played God. You let her die, rather than be like me.

This episode opened up so many questions about Jesse's past and the people in it.

Yes, it was great Tulip was brought back to life with a new-found mission, but the storyline was really about all the people Jesse considers his family.

Too bad he can't off Grandma like he wants to. She's too damn smart for that

In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if she arranged it so that Tulip's very life depends on Grandma's safety.

What do you think, Preacher fans? I know we were all excited Tulip came back from the dead, but what did you think of Jesse's family? Were you surprised by anything we found out about Jesse's past? What do you think is the price Jesse has to pay to his Grandma for her favor?
