The show flashes back to when Lucy and Joseph Bauer found the Darkhold. When they first open it, the pages appear blank, but then words materialize. Lucy sees English words, while Joseph sees German. Lucy wonders if the book is reading them.

Joseph wakes up in the hospital to find Coulson and Mack standing over him, demanding to know where the Darkhold is. Joseph tells them he buried where he originally found it. Lucy is already there, but this time when she opens the book the words fade before her eyes. 

Simmons is anxious about her S.H.I.E.L.D.-mandated lie detector test, worried that she'll reveal the existence of Aida and other secrets. Couldson and May head to the prison to question Eli about the Darkhold, but they are attacked by the guards, who have been infected by Lucy and her fellow ghosts. Mack, Daisy and Robbie lead a team of agents to provide backup. Fitz provides the team with vials of an antidote to the psychosis the guards are experiencing.

Simmons takes her lie detector test, but when she hesitates, she's interrupted by Director Mace. Mack lectures Robbie about getting distracted by settling old scores at the prison. Coulson and May meet up with the rest of the team. Lucy locks them in with a bunch of Watchdog prisoners, who are released from their cells. 

Director Mace asks Simmons to help him prepare for a debate on television with anti-Inhuman Senator Ellen Nadeer. Coulson, Daisy and May flee the freed Watchdogs. Daisy locks May and Coulson safely away behind a door so that she can fight the Watchdogs herself. Robbie and Mack find Eli and break him out. Senator Nadeer questions whether Director Mace is the right man to lead S.H.I.E.L.D., leading him to reveal that he is an Inhuman.

Daisy nearly dies at the hands of the Watchdogs before May and Coulson manage to save her. In the meantime, a full prison riot has broken out. Robbie tells Eli to go meet S.H.I.E.L.D. in the yard and stays behind to settle a score with an inmate who was a member of the gang involved in the drive-by that paralyzed Gabe. The inmate insists he had nothing to do with it, but Robbie unleashes Ghost Rider on him anyways. When he comes out of the prison, he finds out that Eli never met up with the team; he was kidnapped by Lucy.

Director Mace wants to put Simmons through another lie detector test, but she threatens to expose a lie he told on TV about being a hero in Vienna, and he relents. May tells Daisy that they all care about her, but Daisy insists that when the mission is over she's gone. Lucy takes Eli back to Momentum Labs and asks him to read the Darkhold for her so that she can be fixed and finish what she started. 

Director Mace meets up with Senator Nadeer, who confronts him about S.H.I.E.L.D.'s work with Daisy and Robbie. She tells him Robbie is a murderer and that she'll reveal that S.H.I.E.L.D. is working with him unless she gets what she wants.
