Recap

Elena sees the float plane approach the island and tries to reassure herself that breaking up with Javier was the right thing to do. She joins Ruby at the dock where Ruby asks her to speak to her in Spanish so she can finally learn a second language.

They welcome the Grant family. The mother, Amber, is ecstatic about the Island. Her husband, Dan, and kids, Trevor and Riley, look less enthused. Amber wants a family vacation photo, but Elena and Ruby manage to convince her to postpone it until later when the lighting is better.

Another guest, Isaiah Hughes, arrives. Elena hands him an envelope. He asks directions to the bar. Ruby asks what’s up with him. Elena tells her that his fantasy is to know the date of his death. The date is written on the paper inside the envelope.

Javier walks by with a very cursory greeting. Ruby wonders about it. Elena feigns ignorance. She directs Ruby to follow up with Isaiah. She’ll catch up the the Grant family.

Elena sits down with Amber. She’s there for the fantasy. The rest of the family doesn’t know. She wants her family to be happy. She tells Elena about her own chaotic upbringing.

She has wonderful photos of her family where they look happy. In reality, Riley is a star athlete but wants to quit, Trevor is super smart but is immersed in his devices. Dan doesn’t care if there isn’t an emergency. She asks Elena to make her family as happy in real life as they look on social media.

Elena takes the family photo. Returning to the room, Trevor crashes on the couch with his phone and Dan plans to grade some papers. Riley refuses to play tennis with her mother. Depressed, Amber sits down and finds the photo Elena took, impressed with how perfect it looks.

Dan suddenly comes back in and suggests they go snorkeling. Trevor takes his headphones off and Riley comes in and they’re both enthused about snorkeling as a family. Amber is delighted.

Ruby finds Helene tending bar when she goes to check in on Isaiah. She asks about his fantasy. He explains that his father died suddenly when he was ten and he’s always expected to die young. He’s never made plans or thought long-term. Recently, he’s met someone he’d like to spend a life with but wants to know if he’ll be around to do that.

After a wonderful day snorkeling, the Grants return even more energized and happier than before. Amber is taken aback at their cheeriness. Dan suggests they go for a lobster dinner and everyone agrees.

Amber wakes to a tapping noise. Dan and Trevor are fast asleep but Riley is missing. Amber finds her on the tennis courts, hitting balls.

Amber insists she go back to bed. She takes her racquet from her and finds blood on the handle.

Ruby goes to visit Javier. He tells her Elena dumped him and he’d like some time alone.

On the beach, Amber puts some salve on the blisters Riley busted on her hand, practicing tennis. Riley insists the wounds don’t hurt. Watching Trevor and Dan throw a football, Amber notices their movements seem mechanical.

Elena checks in on her. Amber comments that things don’t feel quite real but she decides not to second guess it. She’s happy to see her family happy. Dan even planned a date for them without her having to hint.

Isaiah returns to the bar and orders a beer from Helene. She gives it to him and comments that she wouldn’t want to know her death date if she was him.

Javier comes by and asks why she’s behind the bar. She explains she got a job. He approves and orders a beer. He tells her that Elena broke up with him.

Amber’s getting ready for her date and Riley offers to help her with her necklace. Glancing into the mirror, Amber sees another Riley trapped on the other side of the mirror, screaming for help.

At dinner, Amber tries to tell Dan about what she saw. He reassures her that the kids are fine and she shouldn’t worry. When she persists, he distracts her with a diamond tennis bracelet.

He takes her out onto the dance floor. Amber looks down on the reflective surface of the dance floor and sees another Dan banging from the other side, calling her name.

Ruby catches Elena looking at photos on her phone. Elena insists she’s very busy. Ruby tells her she talked with Javier and she knows Elena broke up with him without explanation.

Elena retaliates by saying she feels that they have gotten too close, that she made a mistake becoming friends with Ruby. Ruby reminds her that just because she’s hurting doesn’t give her the right to hurt others and leaves.

Elena starts to follow her but Amber comes in, demanding to know what’s happened to her family. Elena directs her to look at herself for answers to her happiness and be less concerned about making her family look like they’re happy.

Returning to her room, Amber hears banging again. She finds Trevor destroying his devices. Picking up his tablet, Amber sees a trapped version of Trevor inside the device.

She goes to leave but Dan’s outside the door. She hides in the bathroom. Looking the mirror, she reaches forward to touch the surface, trying to look deeply at herself as Elena instructed.

Suddenly, she’s through the looking glass in a dark and dingy space. She explores and starts reciting her multiplication tables, a childhood strategy for dealing with uncomfortable circumstances. She marks the door with an “X” so she knows where the exit is.

The shadows start to grow and frighten her. She rushes to a door and finds a stairwell. She climbs up the stairs and finds another corridor but all the doors are locked.

One door opens on a bedroom flooded in red light. She finds miscellaneous things including a tennis racquet with her name written on the handle. As she considers it, she’s suddenly grabbed from behind.

It’s Dan and he brings her to the kids. She explains that the things she’s finding are from her childhood. Riley asks why she never talks about her childhood. Amber tells her that it was horrible and that she always wanted to give them the childhood she never had. She found the tennis racquet in a dumpster and begged her parents for lessons so she could join a team and belong somewhere.

Dan apologizes for not being a good parenting partner. Trevor admits they all have things they’re sorry for but they need to escape.

They go back into the corridor and the rumbling and banging begins again. They run for the door to the stairwell. Dan trips on the stairs and falls, twisting his ankle. They send the kids on, to the door with the “X” and Amber tries to help Dan up.

They get back into the room with the mirror. While the family barricades the door, Amber runs to the mirror and sees Roarke. She demands Roarke get them out but Roarke tells her that she has to save her family herself.

Helene serves Isaiah a Zombie cocktail, telling him it’s appropriate because he’s living like he’s dead. He resents her commentary. She points out he’s in a tropical paradise. She takes him down to the beach, makes him take his shoes off and step into the water. She proceeds to kick water at him, goading him into a goofy water battle.

In the mirror world, Amber is frustrated by Elena’s instructions to talk to her family and smashes the mirror to the bathroom.

Helene shares with Isaiah about losing her mother and how people still miss her mother and write to her about how crushed they are to have lost her mother so young. She tells Isaiah that if you live your life right, people will be devastated when you die. Knowing when you’re going to die shouldn’t affect how you live your life.

Isaiah gives her the envelope to burn.

Amber and her family talk as the turbulence roars. As they talk things out, the turbulence calms. Once their emotions are expressed, they are transported back to their room.

Helene joins Javier at his place. She asks how he’s doing and insists that he’s honest with her. He goes to get her coffee and she takes a look at Elijah’s envelope and then puts it in the fire.

Ruby joins Elena at the dock to bid the guests farewell. She’s still irked about Elena’s comment about their work-only relationship. The Grant family ask for another photo but ask that Ruby takes it.

Left alone, Elena apologizes and Ruby accepts. They’re walking away from the dock when Ruby gasps. She felt her tattoo tingle suddenly.

Segundo padlocks suite 12. As he walks away, the door rattles on its hinges.
