Recap

Elena and Ruby wait on the pier. Ruby comments on how easily Javier docks the boat. Elena is chill in her response.

Javier introduces Natalie and Seth Rose. Elena tells Ruby to go ahead and meet with the other guests who arrived the night before. Elena will orient the Roses. Ruby’s excited to go solo.

Elena and Javier have an awkward exchange after Ruby leaves. They agree to try to be friends.

When Elena sits down with the Roses, they explain they’ve been trying to have a baby for three years. Their fantasy is to be free of the stress and pressure of trying to conceive for a little while. Elena gets up and pops a bottle of champagne. She pours a toast for the three of them. After they sip their champagne, both Seth and Natalie have forgotten their difficulties conceiving. They take the bottle Elena offers them and head off on their fantasy vacation.

Ruby welcomes Vivian and Lou Hutchinson to Fantasy Island. They’ve just retired. Lou’s fantasy is to get a hole in one. Vivian just wants to sit under her favorite tree and read a book she’s never had time to read. It’s Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl and she’s managed to avoid spoilers for over a decade.

Vivian needs the Island to help her fulfill her fantasy because their neighbors killed her tree when they tore out the root system when they put in their pool.

Ruby questions whether their fantasies are truly going to transform their lives. The Hutchinsons assure her that that’s what they want.

Ruby opens a door and the Hutchinsons are ecstatic to discover their background with the tree and golf clubs at the ready.

Seth and Natalie are having a romantic, relaxing time in their suite, turning up the music that reminds them of their clubbing days. Natalie’s bag of fertility treatments has turned into a gift bag of toiletries.

In their backyard, the Hutchinsons can hear the music from the Roses’ suite. Vivian is upset by it but Lou tells her to ignore it and enjoy her book.

She’s unable to ignore it and gets up to deal with the music. Resigned, Lou follows her.

Vivian bangs on the door to the suite across the breezeway. Seth opens the door, with Vivian behind him. The couples recognize each other. The Roses are the neighbors who killed Vivian’s tree.

The couples go to Elena and Ruby to explain their pre-existing relationship. Elena informs them that their fantasies are dependent on them resolving their interpersonal disputes.

Lou finds Seth at the bar, wanting to bury the hatchet. Seth takes umbrage at the implication that they are totally in the wrong. Seth wants Vivian to apologize to Natalie.

Javier watches the two men get into a juvenile battle of one upmanship and steps in between them when it looks like it’s going to get serious.

The neighbors walk away.

Natalie finds Vivian reading on the beach. Natalie tries to apologize for their pool construction killing the tree. Vivian informs her she’s filed an injunction to have the pool construction stopped.

As Vivian tries to continue reading Gone Girl. Before Natalie leaves, she spoils the ending for her.

The next morning, Vivian and Seth clear the air about him hiding the injunctions from her.

They’re shown to the dining tent where they discover they’re sitting with the Hutchinsons.

A note from Elena instructs them to break bread together to heal their rift.

Lou tries to get everyone on the same page by extolling the virtues of their neighborhood. Vivian reminisces about how their neighbors brought them a basket of cookies when they first moved in. When she did the same for the Roses, they threw them out because Seth can’t eat gluten.

Seth comments negatively about their lawn decor and Lou strikes back by stating it’s good they can’t have kids as the world doesn’t need more people like them. This is a revelation to the Roses, reminding them what their original fantasy has been.

This starts a food fight.

Ruby comes to check on them and gets a face full of fruit trifle.

Lou and Vivian discuss the pool that killed their tree. Vivian encourages Lou to go get his hole in one.

Seth and Natalie are sad they remember why they came to the Island again. Seth wants to know how Lou knew they were struggling to conceive. Natalie gets a look on her face.

Natalie drives a golf cart into Lou’s path to the green. She confronts him over the fact he shared his knowledge about the Roses’ fertility issues that she shared with him during their secret Sunday golf games.

Lou accuses her of ruining his fantasy of a hole in one and Vivian hasn’t been able to enjoy her tree. Natalie is so incensed by the perceived frivolous nature of their fantasies that she vows to destroy them. She steals Lou’s clubs and drives off with them.

Lou chases after her. They nearly run over Ruby.

Elena finds Javier doing some paperwork. They have a short awkward conversation before Ruby comes by to let Elena know there’s a problem with the Roses and Hutchinsons.

Natalie bangs on the Hutchinsons’ suite door. Vivian opens it. Natalie rushes by her and starts hacking at the tree with Lou’s golf clubs.

Natalie spots a chainsaw in the garden shed and starts it up to start cutting the tree down. Seth and Lou arrive. Elena and Ruby arrive next. Elena calls a stop to everything. The chainsaw disappears from Natalie’s hands.

Elena says they’ll try a different way since the Roses and Hutchinsons have not taken the opportunities the Island has provided to resolve their differences.

They are all transported to a beachside court.

Elena, as judge, explains the Island will decide which couple will move as the couples clearly cannot remain neighbors. The decision will be binding.

The Hutchinsons take the stand first. The Island produces as exhibits a branch from their tree that their son used as a wand one year and a rock that they used to mark the grave of their dog they buried under the tree.

When Lou states they filed the injunction against the pool, Natalie calls it perjury because Vivian makes all the decisions in their home.

The next exhibit is a pocketknife the Hutchinsons used to carve their family’s initials into the tree’s trunk. Vivian breaks down crying over how much she misses the tree because it represents their whole lives together and their kids’ childhoods.

Ruby observes to the Roses that Vivian’s anger was a cover for her deep sadness.

Seth and Natalie take the stand. The first exhibit is Natalie’s own baby sun hat. They explain that the pool was something they wanted to build for their children.

The next exhibit is monogrammed towels the Roses gifted to friends who bought homes in the suburbs and started having kids. Seth asserts that Natalie wants kids more than anything but Lou says that she only wants kids so Seth won’t be disappointed.

When Seth demands to know when Natalie would’ve told Lou this, Natalie and Lou admit they’ve been golfing together on Sundays.

The third exhibit is a matchbook from the diner where they had their first date. They recall how great that date was, how they got their first place in the city nearby, and starting dreaming about their future together there.

Ruby comments to the Hutchinsons that it seems the Roses just wanted a future like the Hutchinsons past.

Elena asks everyone to stand for the Island’s verdict. They are all transported to the golf course. Elena declares each couple will have one stroke and whoever gets closest to the hole will stay in their home.

Natalie gets to go first. Her ball lands a few inches from the hole.

Lou reaches for the magical club but, with a look at Vivian, he selects a different one. Natalie notices.

He slices into a sand trap. Elena declares Natalie and Seth the winners.

Walking together afterwards, Natalie and Seth discuss whether having kids is really their wish or just a goal they’d set because it’s what everyone else was doing next. They decide having each other is their perfect family.

Under their tree, Lou and Vivian discuss how they want to spend their retirement. Lou suggests they get an RV. Vivian’s all for it.

There’s a knock at the door. Lou opens it and finds Natalie and Seth there. They ask to come in and Lou welcomes them.

Ruby stands looking forlornly at the water and comments to Elena that she hasn’t heard from Isla in a while. Elena expresses her sorrow for Ruby.

The couple show up to depart together. The Roses have decided to move back to the city. The Hutchinsons have planned their first RV trip and plan to buy a condo near their kids.

As an apology for spoiling the end of Gone Girl, Natalie gives Vivian a copy of The Couple Next Door.

Lou retrieves the magical driver and gives it to Ruby so she can get her hole in one.

Javier checks to see if everyone’s ready to go and invites them on board.

He touches base with Elena and comments that although they’ve never been “just friends” it doesn’t mean they can’t try to become that now.

Ruby takes Lou’s driver to the course and bags her hole in one.

Fantasy Island Season 2 Episode 10 Quotes

Seth: [Three years] is how long we’ve been trying to have a baby.
Natalie: First, we tried the usual way. Then IUI. Then medicate IUI. Then IVF.
Elena: That’s a lot.
Seth: I’ve stabbed her so many times, I’ve lost count. That sounded weird.

Sorry. Didn’t mean to be talking about how great your ex-boyfriend is. I’m sure he has many flaws.
