Recap

As the episode begins, Coach Taylor addresses the team. They're now in control of their destinies and if they win Friday's game, they're going to the Texas state playoffs.

Tension builds as the Panthers find the playoffs only one game away, easily within reach. But off-the-field drama continues when Smash's mother makes a discovery that could destroy her son's gridiron dreams.

Mrs. Williams storms into the locker room and grabs Smash and they go into the coach’s office. She shows Coach the steroids and accuses the Coach of helping him get steroids. Coach Taylor assures Mrs. Williams he has nothing to do with it.

Smash is silent and has nothing to say for himself.

The Garritys are having dinner and Buddy Garrity is talking about selling cars... and talking about Ty Johnston, a freshman at SMU and a psychology major. He’s doing a study on cheerleaders and football and wants to talk to Lyla. Buddy has set Lyla up on a date, hoping that Lyla will move on to someone else and leave Jason.

Coach Taylor is getting ready for a dinner meeting with Mayor Rodell. Tami Taylor is ready to go but Coach Taylor is not in the mood to meet with the Mayor. Tami asks Coach what he’s going to do about Smash. Coach doesn’t know what to do about Smash because if he reports him, then his football career is over. He’s battling over whether or not to report him, but one thing's for damn sure, Smash can't play juiced.

Tyra is talking to her sister, Mindy, and her mother, Angela, about Tim. Tyra imitates Tim’s voice and tells them how he apologized but they just think he’s saying sorry because he’s horny. Angela thinks Tim is cute and Tyra should forgive him. Tyra talks about getting her mom a job at Buddy Garrity’s car dealership.

Mayor Rodell, a lesbian, wants Tami Taylor to be apart of her re-election campaign. Tami says she would love to consider it. Coach, who is just now aware of the official's "alternative lifestyle" doesn't like politicians and is wary of Tami taking the job.

Smash has been out all night and is upset with his mother, blaming her for ruining his life. "Baby," she says with her typical no-nonsense demeanor, "I'm tryin' to save it."

After spending the night in his car, Smash visits Coach in his office, and tells him that he made a mistake. Coach is really upset with Smash because what he did isn’t a simple mistake. What he did is much, much worse.

Taylor announces to the team that Smash will not be playing in the game on Friday night and asks the team to respect his privacy. Coach really doesn’t want to kick Smash off the team, however, and is trying to think of a way to rationalize not doing so.

Matt Saracen (Zach Gilford), poring over game film, is happy that his father will get to see him play with his newfound strategy. But he learns Henry is going to be shipping out to Iraq and he won’t be able to see him play Friday. It is a surprise announcement to Matt but he’s trying to be okay with it.

Jason asks Herc to drive him over to the restaurant where Lyla is meeting with Ty. Jason puts on a black hoodie as Herc teases Jason about Lyla’s "track record" so to speak. Lyla sees the wheelchair in the back of the pickup truck as Herc and Jason drive by, and they're busted.

Tyra begs Tim to do her a favor and talk to Buddy Garrity about getting a job for her mother. Buddy agrees, but he asks Tim about Smash and what's going with him. Tim either doesn't know or won't say, but the tension in the town is palpable.

Smash comes home and wants to have a talk with his mother. He finally takes some responsibility for what he has done. Smash feels like without football there is nothing for him. His mother tells him that she’s okay with who he is and that she wishes could just be Brian, not Smash, and didn’t put all this pressure on himself.

Jason goes over to the Garrity home and asks Buddy why he set Lyla up on a date with Ty Johnston. Jason feels like Buddy is trying to keep Lyla away from him and he would be right to think that way. Buddy tries to say it wasn't a date, but after Street persists, he admits that it's in the back of his mind that she might not be best staying with him.

Coach Mac and Coach Taylor are having a meeting with the rest of the staff and they are going over the game plan for the upcoming game. Tami stops by and says she’s going to join Mayor Rodell’s campaign. Coach suggests that she’s on the committee because she is the Coach’s wife. Tami gets a little offended, and Coach Taylor admits to Tami that he’s uncomfortable with the Mayor being a lesbian.

Herc and Jason are out drinking. Jason tells Herc about confronting Buddy Garrity and that Buddy said he wanted his little girl to have a quote un-quote good life. Herc tells Jason that he can’t leave Lyla because of Buddy because there are a million Buddy Garritys out there that will keep him from ever being with anyone.

Nine minutes left in the game and the score is 0-0. The Panthers, driving, have 3rd and 1 and Matt hands the ball off to Riggins, who is stopped for a 7-yard loss. Coach Taylor is going to go for it on 4th and 8, and is going to use one of Matt’s plays. Matt tells Coach that he can hit the receivers even though South Pines safeties are fast. Matt pleads with Coach that the safeties are still playing too deep.

Matt goes into the huddle and calls on of his plays that he made up after watching film on South Pines. He's confident that he can beat the safeties coverage. Matt throws a complete pass to Tim Riggins in between the two safeties and Tim breaks it all the way for a touchdown.

The Panthers win and they are officially going to the playoffs!

Buddy decides that he will talk to Angela about a job, and they go into his office. Tyra has a funny look on her face because she’s not really sure why Buddy wants to talk to her mom... it's obvious Buddy thinks Tyra’s mother is a hottie and that's playing a role in her hiring.

Coach Taylor talks to Smash as they leave the post-game party. He tells Smash that if he stays clean and submits himself to private drug testing that he can get back on the team. Coach Taylor and Smash are eating at a diner and in the back making food at the diner is a former player that was number 6 on Grady Hunt’s top 100 list.

Coach wanted Smash to see him and where he is because Smash took steroids just to impress Grady and get on his list but being on the list doesn’t guarantee success. The quarterback of Westerby went to Notre Dame and is now making burgers and washing dishes.

Lyla comes home after the game and Jason is waiting for her. Lyla knows Jason was spying on her with Herc. Jason asks her if he should be jealous and then admits he is jealous. Lyla thinks that Jason is breaking up with her. Jason tells her he went out with Herc and he realized he likes Herc because he didn’t let his handicap define him.

Jason feels like he can still be a good positive person and move on with his life. Jason tells Lyla that he loves her and then asks her to marry him. Lyla and Jason kiss, until next week...
