Grey's Anatomy Season 12 Episode 21
You're Gonna Need Someone On Your Side
Maggie and Meredith catch Amelia and Owen naked in the living room, leading to ribbing throughout the day for the love birds, as well as advice from Meredith to both of them to stop making things so difficult for themselves. At the end of the day, Amelia abandons the carpool home and takes a taxi to Owen's trailer. After an awkward speech, they agree to give their relationship a real shot.
Ben and Bailey argue at home about his working as an anesthesiologist. She tells him that she won't work with him, and she'll encourage the department heads to do the same. When another anesthesiologist calls in sick, Ben is his replacement, much to Bailey's ire. They argue back and forth throughout the procedure, making Maggie and Riggs increasingly uncomfortable. Ben manages to prove his value at a crucial moment. After Bailey leaves, Maggie tells Ben that he is being arrogant, and that if Bailey was really set against him, he wouldn't be in the room. Riggs points out to Bailey that Ben needs to work because he is a good doctor, and his drive is like that of any other promising student. Bailey ends up scheduling Ben in for a few procedures, but tells him he's still sleeping on the couch.
An older gentleman is brought in with a spinal break after tripping down some stairs. The devoted doorman turns out to be his paramour, although they've not acted on their feelings physically due to the man not wanting to upset his wife, who he also cares for. Meredith thinks their situation is sad, and uses it to illustrate to Owen why he and Amelia should just give in to each other and stop making things difficult. During his surgery, they find advanced bone cancer that has metastasized to his liver and lungs. Meredith tries to encourage him to be honest with his wife and enjoy his last year of life, but when the doorman comes by to visit after refusing to leave during the surgery, the man tells him that he can go ahead and go. Insult is added to injury when the wife tips him.
Stephanie brings Kyle in with a new tremor, and quickly becomes a nightmare family member. After she second guesses Amelia and suggests alternate treatments and attempts to scrub in for the procedure, Amelia takes her access badge away and makes her sit in the waiting area. She admits that Kyle is her boyfriend to the doorman waiting for the man with the broken spine, but overall does not take the not knowing very well. After Kyle is brought back to his room, she visits him, leaving him a note and kissing him goodbye while he sleeps. She breaks down in the locker room, explaining to Jo that she can't handle being helpless, and that she broke up with him so as to choose herself.
April and Avery have their ultrasound with Arizona, and everything is great until Arizona notices a slight abnormality in the baby's brain. She freezes up a little, not wanting to reveal the bad news, and then April doesn't react well to her attempts to calm the mother to be, and blames Arizona for not catching this sooner. When the blood work comes back inconclusive, Arizona wants to wait two weeks for another ultrasound, but April asks for a fetal MRI, which carries a risk for mother and baby. Eventually Arizona agrees, and the scan comes back showing that the baby is healthy. Arizona then gives Jackson and Avery a list of alternative OBGYNs, saying that she can't be their doctor and their friend, and she'd rather be their friend.
The custody battle goes forward, with Arizona and Callie both scrambling to get their friends to testify for them. Alex says no to both of them, refusing to take sides. Callie recruits Meredith and Owen while they work on a surgery together. Arizona planned to ask Jackson and April, but Penny interrupted them, and then she had to give them the news that something might be wrong with the baby. Arizona freaks out with Penny on her service, feeling like the resident is spying on her for Callie. After having a breakdown in the cafeteria, Richard comforts her but tells her she's going to have to fight like she never has before for Sofia. At the end of the day, Callie asks how Arizona treated Penny when she finds out whose service she was on, and Penny covers for Robbins.
