Catherine tells Miranda she needs to reevaluate Alex's place at the hospital. When Alex meets a woman at the court house, he tells her to come in due to a rash on her hands. After some tests, he figures out she has pancreatic cancer. To makes matters worse, she is newly pregnant. Alex wants Miranda to recommend getting a surgery that could extend her life so she can deliver the baby. Miranda eventually does so. Later, Miranda tells Catherine she believes in second chances and she won't fire Alex. Catherine is fine with that, but wants them to restructure the entire residency program.

Amelia avoids talking to Owen about the fact she isn't pregnant. A father and son come in after a road rage car accident. The father survives, but the son passes away after an unexpected brain bleed. Amelia is distraught and runs into Alex. She confesses to him about how she had a son who passed away shortly after birth and how she felt relief when the pregnancy test was negative.

Leah returns to the hospital as Maggie's new resident. Everyone acts awkward around her, especially Arizona. Arizona eventually apologizes. 

Andrew and Jo confide in each other about the upcoming court date. Andrew sees Jo talking to Alex (while she was helping with his patient), and later tells her she deserves better.
