Matt, Bridget, and Hilde go to the prison to visit Sam Gillis but Matt has flashbacks and goes back to the car. Unfortunately, Sam has been put in solitary confinement and isn’t allowed visitors. 

 

They get pulled over after leaving the prison by Lt. Frank Briggs for having out of state plates. Frank makes it clear that he isn’t happy that Matt and his family are in Erie Harbor. Hilde realizes that Frank is the person who watches their house at night. 

 

Izzy forgives Ethan for running off when the dog chased them after he tells her he was bitten by a dog as a kid. Izzy leaves the house in the early morning hours to visit the cabin she found in the woods. Someone has obviously been spending time there. There are toys, marbles, and a telescope. Hilde follows her and tells Izzy that she and her friends want access to the cabin three days a week so they can work or else she’ll tell their parents that Izzy has a boyfriend. Izzy agrees.  

 

Hilde video chats with Sam Gillis on the school computer. Sam has information about Penny but he says someone at the prison is listening in. The Principal stops the call. Later Kim tells Hilde that she doesn’t believe that Sam is guilty either but most of the town does.

 

Matt finds Frankie at the local cop bar and asks why he’s stalking his family. He says Frankie accused an innocent man of murder when he took the stand and swore he heard Sam Gillis in the van. Frankie says Matt is the only on who believes Sam is innocent and says Matt spent seven years trying to prove it and only managed to ruin his and his father’s lives. 

 

Bridget shares with her new friends at the ice cream parlor that Matt became obsessed with the case of a missing girl in the Hamptons and he became emotionally involved with the girl’s mother, Miriam. Bridget doesn’t say it but she’s obviously hurt that Matt could talk to Miriam but never confided in her. 

 

Hilde believes that Corrections Officer Ed Quinlan is keeping them from talking to Sam. She asks Trip check out Ed. Trip goes to Ed’s houseboat but he isn’t home. Hilde sneaks in through the back and finds a bottle of Penny Gillis’ prescription medication in Ed’s cabinet. 

 

It turns out that Ed was forcing Penny to give him drugs or money in order to keep Sam safe in prison and he most likely killed her. 

 

Matt realizes that his father has been writing the safe combination on the origami birds that he’s given him. In the safe are notes and files. Sylvester was investigating Richie Fife’s disappearance and he concluded that Matt was right and Sam wasn’t guilty. 

 

Bridget looks at the court transcripts from the case. A young Frankie said he heard Sam Gillis and gave a partial license plate number. But after watching the video, Bridget realizes that the van didn’t have any plates and Frankie lied. 

 

Matt confronts Frankie, who hits him.
