Jane the Virgin Season 1 Episode 1 introduces us to the world of Jane Villanueva; a world much like the telenovelas Jane and her family watch every day. After a series of misunderstandings, Jane, a young woman who swore to remain a virgin until marriage, gets artificially inseminated with the sperm of her current boss, Rafael. Jane's boyfriend, Michael, is ready to take the next step with Jane and proposes that same day. After learning Jane is pregnant, he begs her to not have the baby. After speaking with her mother, Xiomara, Jane learns that Xio always wanted Jane and never regrets her choice of having a baby as a teenager. Once Jane learns that Rafael had cancer and this baby is his only chance at having a child, she decides she'll have the baby if Rafe and his wife will raise it. Michael warms up to Jane's plan and when Jane turns around and proposes to Michael, he accepts.

Rafael has just returned to work after battling cancer and is stuck in a loveless marriage. His wife, Petra, is only staying with Rafael until she can get the $10 million payout from their pre-nup. Rafael asks for a divorce, but Petra traps him by informing him that Jane only wants to give the baby to a happy couple. They'll have to stay together.
