Recap

Olivia joins Elliot and family at Kathy's graveside. They all place flowers at her grave. Eli wants to skip a memorial lunch to hang out with Sara, his "study partner." Olivia is glad Elliot is trusting Eli these days. Elliot mentions that he has a tracking device on Eli's phone and security cameras at the house, prompting Kathleen and Dickie to go. Elliot then confides to Olivia that the last nine months have been a blur and he needs Wheatley's trial to begin so he can have closure.

Olivia reassures Elliot that Wheatley is out of postponements. However, at trial, after the judge blocks a recording of Becker's statement, Wheatley fires his lawyer, securing a one-week delay. Carisi and his boss are mad, especially since they have this judge who shouldn't be on the bench after what they have on him. SVU agrees to help with prepping witnesses.

Meanwhile, Wheatley interviews lawyers. The last one of the day is Barba, who tells him he doesn't suffer fools...

The Deputy Chief asks Olivia about Barba. She knows him well and he's good. She tries to introduce Barba to Elliot, who doubts Barba's condolences about Kathy's death are sincere and walks off.

Privately, Olivia confronts Barba. Why is he doing this? Barba says that Wheatley is being railroaded and the NYPD is engaging in vigilantism. He also says if he drops this case, some shark will go after Olivia and her relationship with Elliot. Olivia doesn't believe his motives are pure.

In court, Olivia testifies and Barba suggests that Elliot should have been recused from this case and that she allowed him to beat up Jacob Peters. Bell testifies next and Barba tries to get her to say that Elliot used excessive force with Isaak as well as doubting that Isaak really purchased the bomb making material.

For some reason, Wheatley asks to see Olivia. He is disappointed that Barba insists on being in the room. Wheatley insinuates that Angela's testimony will be disturbing. The Stabler kids and Olivia should skip court. Olivia is disgusted by him and goes.

Olivia meets Elliot on an empty street. He is concerned about how Barba treated her. She wants to know what happened between him and Angela. Elliot won't tell her and thinks it's not her business. Olivia complains that their relationship is a one-way street, all about Elliot's grief, never about how she's doing. Why did he even give her that letter that he didn't write himself? Elliot doesn't know. Olivia doesn't either.

Angela testifies. On cross, Barba gets her to admit she was and is in love with Elliot. Eli and Olivia both look upset, but Wheatley is the most angry. In private he throws stuff off a desk and complains that Barba made him look like a cuckold. Barba says Wheatley's reaction proves his strategy was correct.

Richie testifies next. Wheatley addresses him directly, breaking court rules. Richie stares off into the distance then suddenly denies he heard Becker say anything. Carisi reads off Richie's statement that he heard Becker plotting to kill Kathy. Richie says he lied because he was angry at his father.

Carisi and Carisi's boss say they took a big hit. Stabler is sure Wheatley got to Richie. Stabler is up next to testify and he needs to stay calm so that the jury doesn't believe he was out of control while investigating this case. Carisi tells Stabler not to let Wheatley get in his head.

Stabler's testimony starts out cool and collected, but Barba's cross gets to him. Stabler keeps insisting that Wheatley killed a whole lot of people, not just Kathy. He's admonished by the judge to only answer the questions he's asked. Stabler asks how much Wheatley is paying the judge and ends up held in contempt.

The guard lets Stabler use the bathroom. Naturally, Wheatley walks in and gloats about how shocked he is that Olivia didn't leave after learning about Angela and Elliot. Elliot says Olivia is good like that and knows a lot more than the jury does. The guard interrupts their one-up contest to tell them the court is back in session.

Barba tries to rest his case but Wheatley insists on testifying. If Barba won't let him, he'll fire him.

Wheatley testifies and puts on a good show about how he's innocent and didn't know anything about any of this and how Elliot needed to blame him and conflated his testimony against some other mobster with what he thinks Wheatley did. On cross, he loses it and says that if he wanted Carisi diad, he'd be dead.

Despite this obvious admission of guilt, the jury is sent back twice to keep deliberating because they're deadlocked. Barba sees Benson at a nearby bar but she won't talk to him. She feels betrayed by him.

Jury is back. They say they are hopelessly deadlocked. It's been less than a day but the judge won't hold them any longer and declares a mistrial. Meanwhile, Elliot finds out that Eli has disappeared along with all the drugs in the medicine cabinet. Convinced Wheatley will not be retried, Elliot takes off to find his son.
