Law & Order: SVU Season 20 Episode 14 revolves around the trial of Annabeth Pearl, a woman who was arrested for murdering her husband, a cop named Tommy.

While waiting in the witness room, Carisi, Rollins, and Fin wonder whether Benson will show up as required. Carisi has doubts about the case, while Rollins is convinced the woman is guilty, and Fin feels a case is a case and doesn't care about the outcome. Carisi is upset about the idea that the cops have the power to put people in jail who might not deserve it and that if he lied on the stand the defendant would go away forever. Fin thinks he needs to chill out and eat a donut.

Benson finally shows up while Fin is testifying. The argument escalates. Carisi rambles about Jesus being given a crown of thorns. Rollins has no clue what he's talking about. Carisi knows the victim from the police academy and thinks he was a prick. Rollins thinks him being a cop makes a difference to the case. Benson tells them to stop and that they need to have empathy.

Rollins says she has too much empathy. The woman could have walked away and didn't. Carisi tells her, very upset, about a domestic violence call he got where he could do nothing because there was no sign of physical violence and a month later the man killed the woman. He is called to testify.

Carisi pretty much tanks the case with his testimony. Meanwhile, Benson and Rollins talk. Rollins insists the woman was weak -- just like Rollins' mother, who didn't leave her abusive father. Benson tells Rollins she doesn't know what terror is like and describes her PTSD symptoms. Rollins says this is different, the victim wasn't William Lewis and the defendant wasn't held hostage. Benson disagrees. She thinks they are all victims of their past but maybe she won't get called to testify.

Rollins is called. The bailiff asks Benson for some donuts for his wife. He says the secret to a happy marriage is love.

In court, Annabeth testifies and tells Stone she never wanted to have sex but was terrified of her husband so couldn't say no. Stone says that is not rape. The judge admonishes him.

Fin tells Benson a story about a fish he caught and threw back. He thinks anything that fights so hard to live deserves a chance to do so.

Benson is called to the stand, where she must choose what to say when she is asked about Annabeth's statement.
