Madam Secretary Season 5 Episode 14 deals with a conflict in Nicaragua that quickly escalates into a hostage situation that could affect the United States.
Rebels against the current president, Mateo Sandino Junior, hole up in a local church, where Sandino threatens to use firepower to put down what he calls a terrorist threat. But the protesters are missionaries, including 16 Americans, that the US wants returned safely. Sandino refuses to stand down because the CIA killed his mother when he was a little boy.
Elizabeth does some research and finds out Dalton has some past ties to the region that might help resolve the situation. Specifically, Dalton was involved in the original mission and was able to convince Sandino's father to choose peace and to work with the US despite the fact that the CIA killed his wife. Dalton goes on a potentially futile mission to talk to Sandino Senior, who is in Florida recovering from surgery, and see if he can help.
Meanwhile, Jay's long-distance girlfriend is in New York for a chess tournament, but Jay cancels on her in order to help with the Nicaraguan crisis. She comes to DC, but will he be able to see her?
And Henry's niece Sarah comes to visit prior to deploying to Iraq as a medic. Her father wants Henry to pull some strings to get her orders changed, which Henry refuses to do. Sarah seems nervous about her mission and Henry takes her to see Elizabeth's brother Will even though he's not sure it's a good idea, but Will is able to give her some advice that helps calm her nerves.
