Recap

President Gerald Ford creates a National Commission in favor of honoring women and ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment. He appoints Jill as the leader. They are currently four states away from ratification.

Phyllis's family is interested in hearing what Republican feminist Jill Ruckelshaus has to say on live national television.

Phyllis is inspired to increase their mailing list to 40,000 members in a year. Alice, Pamela, and Rosemary are not sure they can do it, Phyllis suggests joining forces with non-political people and organizations.

Jill arrives home from an event and complains to her husband, Billy, about an interaction she had with Bella that evening. Jill needs funding for the National Commission.

In DC, Shirley and Bella are waiting to meet with Congressman Wayne Hays. Jill arrives at the meeting and succeeds in getting the Congressman to sign for National Commission funding.

Phyllis is attending law school and makes phone calls to various religious groups in between classes. She invites leaders of these groups to attend an Eagle Forum meeting, a conservative interest group she created.

At the meeting, someone shows Phyllis a newsletter from a different organization that plagiarized Phyllis's wording.

Jill and Bella are worried about Ronald Reagan gaining popularity, in large part because of Phyllis. Jill is determined to talk to Phyllis. Jill is frustrated that Bella is not doing anything about Democratic congressmen hiring young women for sexual favors and write them down as secretaries on their payroll.

Rosemary found the woman who plagiarized Phyllis. Phyllis, Alice, and Rosemary meet with her at her house. Phyllis wants to work with their organization, Women Who Want to be Women.

The leader of this organization is on the fence because Phyllis is Catholic and she is Evangelical.

Jill introduces herself to Phyllis. After some small talk, Jill invites Phyllis for drinks, Phyllis agrees.

While out for drinks, Jill suggests that Phyllis is only advocating for Stop ERA to get a far-right conservative into the presidency.

Jill tells Phyllis why the Equal Rights Amendment is important and why it is a bipartisan issue. Phyllis thinks the women who perform sexual favors for congressmen are asking for it. Jill gets angry and leaves.

Meanwhile, Shirley is frustrated by her party's ignorance of the sexual abuse going on in some congressmen's offices. Bella does not think they can do anything about it.

Jill comes home just as members of Gerald Ford's team leave. Her husband is on the shortlist to be Ford's running mate.

Ford's campaign is concerned with how vocal Jill is about women's issues. Billy does not want her to go to the Republican National Convention.

Phyllis attempts to get the leader of Women Who Want to be Women to join the Eagle Forum. She finally agrees when Phyllis gives her the role of Vice President of the Eagle Forum, and when Phyllis mentions her goal of getting a conservative Christian into office.

The leader of Women Who Want to be Women is determined to get rid of pro-choice people and gay people. Phyllis nods in agreement, knowing that her son John, is gay.

Phyllis goes to confessional and breaks down in tears. Phyllis says that she knows she should outcast John from her other children, but she has not.

Shirley goes on the record about the sexual abuse among certain congressmen. Bella says she should have said something with her.

On Independence Day in 1976, Fred and Phyllis talk to John when all the other kids are not there. Fred forces John to choose a career path, John settles on law school. When Fred leaves, Phyllis suggests that John attend law school out of state.

Jill agreed not to go to the Republican National Convention, and help her husband instead. Audrey calls her from the convention, saying that Phyllis showed up with the Eagle Forum in thousands to get Republicans to vote no on keeping the ERA part of the party's platform. Audrey suggests they might have to concede abortion rights if they want to keep the ERA.

In the end, the Republican Party vote in favor of the Equal Rights Amendment as part of their platform. Phil Crane invites Phyllis to a suite to meet Reagan campaign members.

Pamela, Alice, and Rosemary are upset about how things turned out; they suggest that Phyllis does not care about the ERA anymore. Phyllis promises to suggest a floor vote.

Meanwhile, Billy tells Jill that Ford picked Bob Dole, a pro-life politician, as a running mate. She breaks down in tears.

Reagan's campaign tells Phyllis to drop the floor fight when she suggests it.

Mrs. America Season 1 Episode 6 Quotes

Wayne: State meetings open to the public? Sounds like a fiasco.
Jill: I have never been associated with a fiasco. Massacres, yes; fiascos, no.

Wayne: Is it me, or the gal is never happy?
Shirley: Not when the gals are only making 56% of what the men make.
Wayne: So you won't be happy until you make a hundred percent of what men make?
Shirley, Bella, and Jill: Yes!
