Recap

Looks like we're getting backstory on Ian's time with the Native Americans. His tattoos and being accepted into their family.

Jamie and Claire are having sex again.

Major MacDonald is their [ill] houseguest. He leaves the next day, which is none too soon.

Fergus is going on a journey, and Jamie wants him to visit with Jocasta, too. Fergus knows that Jamie is hoping distance from his worries will help him heal. Jamie agrees, but only with time.

Fergus misses the time he spent with Jamie in Edinburgh, when they were churning out newspapers.

Fergus thanks him for saving his life, and Jamie says he's just balancing the scales.

They're practicing some shooting on the property. They're assuring that the weapons they're giving to the Cherokee are worthy.

As they talk about the Cherokee, Ian corrects their usage of the Chief's name.

Brianna isn't feeling well about what she knows will come to the Cherokee in 60 years, what then becomes The Trail of Tears.

When Jamie and Ian go to the Cherokee camp, Ian spots a Mohawk horse just moments before one of his brothers comes to greet him.

Later that night, Ian shares the story of his love, who he called Emily. The next scene is in Mohawk, but there aren't any subtitled.

She has carved him a wolf, her clan's signet.

He was becoming one of them and even Kaheroton was like his brother. Kaheroton was with Johiehon, who left him for another. They are all raising her child. Ian wonders if he'll choose another, too, but he says that they do not choose. The women choose, and he flicks the wolf around Ian's neck.

Emily has made a bracelet for Ian to remind him of when they were joined together as one. Sex!

Another Mohawk scene that I can't understand. They're telling stories. Kaheroton asks him to tell a story about his world, and Ian says he can't really tell one. But they press, and he tells the story of a witch with flaming red hair. He doesn't know the words in Mohawk to tell it, so Emily asks him to send a song about his other world.

Later, when Emily got pregnant, she lost the bairn and almost her life. Ian never even got to see the baby. Emily got pregnant again, and she lost the baby early.

A few months later, everything changed when he was told that his spirit wasn't Mohawk. They send him away to his people where his spirit is strong. Wahionhaweh agrees. He's not even permitted to say goodbye.

Ian pushes it, though, and finds that Emily has chosen Kaheroton. She cries. Please. It is what must be. She sends him away, but you can see her heart is breaking.

Ian is still torn, wondering if he made the right decision to leave.

Lizzie and Josiah are acting as guinea pigs so that Malva can learn how to give ether and assist in an operation.

Ian visits with another Mohawk brother who assures him that everyone didn't want him to leave, but Emily and Kaheroton had a son who brings them much joy. He was walking when they left.

Ian confronts Kaheroton.

Some white dude is drunk and grabs and insults Kaheroton. The drunk fat ass challenges the Kaheroton to a duel, and Kaheroton accepts. The ambience goes very dark.

Ian is very sad. He blames himself for his daughter's death. He wonders if he's being punished, but Jamie says God is gracious and merciful, and they need to trust in his plan.

He called his daughter Iseabeil and can't help but imagine her wandering and lost. Jamie understands. He lost Faith, who he never got to hold, either. They pray, hoping Faith and Iseabiel find each other in heaven.

Ian gives Jamie's weapon to Kaheroton. He deserves a fighting chance. Kaheroton asks Ian to go to Emily if he dies, and take care of her and their son.

When Chief Twiskwa tells Jamie to tell his King he will fight with them, Jamie pulls him aside to tell him about Claire and Brianna and their warnings of the future.

The duel commences. The fat bastard turns and shoots early, but Ian throws his tomahawk, saving Kaheroton. Kaheroton chooses not to shoot. Ian returns his bracelet. God chose him to be with Emily.

Ian returns the carving of the wolf to the water.

Ian realizes now that he can be both Wolf's Brother and Ian Murray. Jamie agrees, as long as he is who is in his heart.

Kezzie wonders what it was like. Lizzie says it wasn't scary, and he marvels that she's not afraid of much.

Claire shares her medical journal with Malva. She's very curious, and doing very well, from Claire's standpoint. Allan still considers Claire a witch. Malva doesn't agree, but she does find it enchanting.

Claire asks Malva to straighten up while she greets Jamie. Malva has a curious look on her face.

While they make love, Malva watches.

My son, by the ceremony that was preformed today, every drop of white blood has been washed from your veins. You are adopted into our great family. You are flesh of our flesh, bone of our bone. You have nothing to fear from us. We will love you and defend you as we love and defend one another. Hence forth, you will be called Okwaho'rohtsi'ah, Wolf's Brother. [whooping and celebration]
