On The Good Doctor Season 3 Episode 3, Claire is assigned the case of a young girl with abdominal pain. Shaun thinks right away the girl will need a lap chole (gall bladder removal surgery) which turns out to be correct. He excitedly tells the patient that it is Claire's first surgery.

THe patient, Michelle, has three foster siblings, including a kindergarten-age sister who is attached to her. The mother is in a rush and wants Michelle home ASAP to take care of the other kids. While Claire is trying to explain that Michelle needs this surgery, Michelle has chest pain and it turns out she had a blood clot in her lung.

The clot was caused by birth control pills. Michelle has to be taken off the pills and be catheterized. Claire notices cuts on Michelle's legs and realizes Michelle cuts herself. Michelle tells her that she is under too much pressure because her mom makes her take care of the foster kids and it's like she's the mother.

Michelle's mother refuses to hear any of this and doesn't want Michelle to see a psychiatrist. Melendez warns Claire not to get involved with this and just focus on the surgery. Nevertheless, Claire tells Michelle about her experience with her own mother and convinces her to talk to a therapist.

Michelle's mother is livid, resulting in Lim taking Claire off the case. Claire talks to Dr Donovan with her own mom, who tells her that Claire is her inspiration. Later, Michelle refuses to have surgery unless Claire does it and Claire gets her to calm down. Melendez gets Michelle's mother to allow Claire to do the surgery.

Meanwhile, a fisherman comes in with a marlin attached to him and refuses to have surgery if it means breaking his prize catch, which he names Franklin.
