Quentin's on a mission to bring back Alice. Margo and Eliot think he's just imagining seeing her. Quentin agrees to come back to Fillory after he attends the memorial service at her parents' house. Once there, he sees Alice again. She doesn't speak, but she guides him into her father's study and helps him find a book. Her father, Daniel, find Quentin in the study. Once he tells him what's happening, Daniel believes him. He thinks they need to build a pyramid so Alice's soul can rest.

As they gather what they need, Quentin's tattoo is causing him pain. Daniel hesitates to climb the ladder in order to complete the spell. Alice shows Quentin a picture and Daniel confesses he's afraid of heights and failed Alice in the past. He falls off the ladder and breaks his leg. Her mother, Stephanie, had been observing everything so she steps in to help. She struggles to be honest about her relationship with Alice. With a push from Quentin, she admits she resented having a daughter as Alice watches.

Once she leaves, Alice's Niffin steps forward. She's not dead. Quentin's demon was not strong enough to kill her. Instead, he tucked her into Quentin's tattoo. He's been carrying her around without knowing it. Alice is pleased with the revenge she took on her parents and tells Quentin they're going to have so much fun together.

Kady tracks down an old friend of her mother's and asks for help to end Julia's pregnancy. She gives her the name of a group that can help, but warns they're dangerous. She doesn't want to see her end up like her mother. Julia follows the clues to a woman named Dana. She's the one who banished Reynard the first time. He also raped her and got her pregnant. Having the baby, and harnessing its power during birth is the only way to vanish Reynard again.

Dana takes Julia prisoner. She mentions that her son is alive and well and a powerful man. Luckily, Julia left a trail for Kady to follow. She arrives and when her magic doesn't work, she punches Dana in the face and frees Julia. After the girls leave, Reynard shows up. 

In Fillory, Prince Ess from the neighboring kingdom of Loria arrives. His kingdom is also affected by the wellspring. He wants to create a treaty and marry Margo. She's not interested so he casts a spell that transports the kingdom to Loria. Margo and Eliot fight over the proposed arranged marriage. But once Eliot learns of Fen's deception, he tells Margo that it's her choice to make, but he wouldn't recommend it.

Margo has sex with Prince Ess to prove she's better at it than the women in Loria. While she's sleeping, Penny pops into her head to find out where they are so he can rescue them. With the aid of the map maker, he travels to Loria, only to discover the missing castle is not there. It was never moved. He tells Margo and Eliot the truth. Angry at being deceived, Margo declares war on Loria.
