With Penny alive, Alice takes it upon herself to help the traveler and Kady get back in touch. But things don’t go as smoothly as Alice thought they would. What begins as a reunion ends as a rocky confrontation leaving Kady and Penny shook. With a new, unsolvable tension between them, Alice and Penny move on, with the former eventually meeting up with Julia. As Alice reveals what it’s like to be defined by magic (without it), she asks Julia for helping getting her’s back. But when the two test out the mechanics of Julia’s “extra sprinkles,” the ugly truth about where Julia’s powers come from are revealed.

Back at the castle, Margo is trying to carry out her plan to get rid of the Fairy Queen when the arrival of another kingdom outside her castle’s walls threatens her freedom. Revealing plans for an arranged marriage, the Fairy Queen makes it clear Margo doesn't have a choice this time. Lucky for Margo, she is far more interested in who her future King might be. However, as is anything that goes right in The Magicians, various hurdles begin to arise that threaten the union. Meanwhile, the next key mission is revealed to Eliot and Quentin, taking the duo on a different kind of quest. As the two enter Fillory to complete a puzzle, they find themselves stumped for what feels like a lifetime.
