Caroline returns on The Vampire Diaries Season 6 Episode 21. She's stepping into the role of resident control freak once again and claims that's her only way to cope with the devastation she feels following turning her humanity back on. She tells Stefan that the time isn't right for the two of them to be together and goes about orchestrating Jo's dream wedding.

Stefan spent the day prior to the wedding taking Damon on a trip into the future to show him what life as a human would be like. After the experience, Damon decides he loves being a vampire until he sees an old married couple still in love after forty years together. That's enough for him to know that he wants to be with Elena even if they only have one perfect day together as humans.
