In the aftermath of Kai's attack at Jo and Alaric's wedding, Damon whooshes Elena to the hospital where she's deemed in perfect physical health. Doctors have no explanation for why she's in a coma, but she is, and Damon turns to Kai for answers. Kai reveals the secret to his magic which puts Damon in a terrible position. He must choose between Bonnie and Elena. Have one of them now and one of them later or make the wrong choice and lose both.

Stefan and Caroline stand watch by Elena's bedside and she takes her time saying goodbye to her friends. Damon, meanwhile, goes on a rampage to end Kai's life. Tyler nearly ends it for him as he triggers his werewolf curse in order to save his own life, and bites and newly vamped Kai shortly after.
