We're seeing William's parents and the excitement they felt at his impending birth. His father went to war, and was killed in action before he was born.

Beth isn't pleased Randall wants to take William to Memphis just a week after his near breakdown. For Randall, it's a big deal to perhaps meet some extended family and spend more time with William before he dies.

The doctor gives Randall the OK despite Beth's protests. He doesn't do it without calling the couple adorable, though.

Randall says they're doing the trip old school, with maps and William as navigator. To that, William tosses the maps out the window. They'll get there. Just drive.

William's mother is saying goodbye to him as he moves to Pittsburgh to follow his dreams. He's going to live with a cousin. Or she's dropping him off. 

William wants to go to see Jack, to go pay his respects to his boy's father. 

William and his mom spend time writing. It's been two years and William has finally written something amazing, according to his cousin. 

Their days as a cover band are officially over.

William wonders why Randall is making the bed when they're in a hotel. Randall says a) it's a motel and b) he likes making the bed.

William tells Randall how he used to buy chickens, by picking one out which would then be killed and defeathered. Randall says he'd be traumatized.

William's mom calls from Pittsburgh.

The house where William and his mom used to live looks different. One of the doors has been bricked up. Randall likens it to his former fros day.

William wants to go inside to see if his treasure is still there. It is and surprises Randall and the homeowners.

Father and son go to the barber shop, to see the historic parts of the city, generally having fun.

William is leaving to go help his mom in Pittsburgh.

When William goes to see his cuz, Randall is excited to see a cousin, especially when he hears he looks like William. 

William arrives at his mom's place and she looks terrible. She's sicker than she let on.

William meets Randall's mother while he's caring for his. That could account for the drugs. She helps him care for his mother while she's going. 

Until she meets the people down the hall and thinks they're more exciting than helping him care for a sick old lady.

Randall gets a cousin and another cousin and he's up to 12 when Beth calls. William is playing on stage and Randall's telling everyone he was raised by white people. He jumps on with his dad.

The next morning, William may not be ready to go, but his body is betraying him. His mother is singing you are my sunshine. He's having his last wind. Randall wasn't quite ready to get that news.
