This Is Us Season 4 Episode 7 revolves around two family dinners.

Jack and Rebecca have the Lawrences over for dinner. Jack is nervous ahead of time, while Mr. Lawrence's wife suggests he not give Randall a book by a black author at this dinner.

The Lawrences arrive and Randall shows them the room he shares with Kevin, prompting Kevin to remark that Mr. Lawrence is a grown-up version of Randall. At dinner, Jack is envious when Randall wants to go to a black arts festival with the Lawrences and says they will go as a family and the Lawrences will go as one too. Later, Rebecca tells Jack that he doesn't need to try so hard and that Randall needs a black role model like Mr. Lawrence.

Meanwhile, in the present, Deja and Malik skip school together so Malik can show Philly to Deja. Randall and Beth invite Malik and his parents over, but Randall secretly hopes they will help him break Deja and Malik up. The evening nearly ends in disaster when Beth and Randall get into an argument with Malik's parents over whose fault it is that the kids skipped school and who is bad for whom.
