Recap

At the Lafferty parents' house, Jeb and Taba discuss the fact that Doreen (the matriarch) has dipped into her stash of preserves, which would make sense if her boys were hiding out. Doreen sits, doing needlepoint. The detectives confer -- Jeb will talk to Doreen, and Taba will search the house.

Jeb asks Doreen when she last saw Ron. Doreen replies that it hasn't been much since her husband passed. Jeb asks if it's because Ron felt responsible for his father's death. Doreen asks Brady to clarify, but he can't.

Jeb says that Brady inferred Ron denied his father care that could have saved his life, but Doreen won't hear of it. Doreen insists on the innocence of her sons.

Jeb gets Brady to join him.

Taba searches and finds a metal baseball bat. He looks in a closet, but no one's in it.

Jeb and Brady head down to the basement, the old clinic where the "school of prophets" met. Jeb asks Brady if he's afraid of Doreen or someone she might get word to. Brady insists this was a loving, welcoming home.

Jeb reminds him that he said Ron essentially killed Ammon, but Brady tries to backtrack. Brady wonders how to discern whose version of the "Holy Spirit" is the truth when some suggest killing.

Jeb accuses Brady of picking and choosing scripture to suit his own needs. He asks Brady if Ron started killing after he let his father die.

Brady explains that Ron was seeking a purer Mormonism, and he had gone to Oregon, looking for a John Bryant. An acolyte of Rulon Allred, Bryant had started his own polygamist community in Nevada and then another in Oregon.

At the community, Ron helps cook, and one of the women gets friendly with him and kisses his cheek. Bryant offers him wine, but Ron refuses. Bryant explains that the prophet's writings on abstaining from alcohol were not commandments from God but from the puritanical culture of the time.

Ron tries a sip of wine.

Later, Ron, Bryant, and some women sit together in a large hot tub. Ron feels at peace and wishes Dianna could be there. Bryant tells Ron that Jesus came to him, commanding him to build an order, that Bryant is the One Mighty and Strong. Bryant asks to baptize Ron, and Ron agrees. Bryant baptizes Ron as a new member of their order. Bryant kisses Ron and Ron kisses him back before pulling away.

Ron returned to an empty home, so he went to his mother and father's place. Dan greets him with a hug. Dan asks him if he found what he was looking for. Ron says it's just the beginning of his journey.

Ron heads downstairs, and it's a bustling operation. Ron greets Robin. Dan introduces Ron to Prophet Onias, who has been eager to meet him. Ron approaches Brady at the typewriter. Everyone is working on Onias's revelations -- restoring plural marriage, removing priesthood rights for Black men, etc.

Ron is dubious that Onias is the prophet. Dan asks Onias to talk of his revelations now that Ron is here. Onias says the Lord had told him that He had chosen six to build a city, and then Onias met the Laffertys and believed them to be the six. Ron angrily calls Onias a liar.

Ron and Onias head to the "dream mine" in the snowy mountains. Onias tells Ron the story of the mine. Onias recounts that the Lord commanded him to build a city of refuge beneath this mine, but the mine would not yield its treasure until the One Mighty and Strong appeared with a scepter in his hand.

Ron says John Bryant believes himself to be the One, but Onias believes Ron is the One. Onias urges Ron to open the mine, build a temple, and get his family back. Onias says he will teach him.

Brady says that Ron worked on his revelations on Brady's own computer, but all Ron really wanted was his wife back.

Jeb and Taba find a sawed-off shotgun. Jeb suggests Taba take a crack at Doreen.

Taba accuses Doreen of harboring the men and allowing the death of her granddaughter Erica. Doreen asks them to remove him, but pyre backs Taba up. Taba threatens her with accessory to murder charges, saying she won't even be allowed to see her sons executed.

Doreen asks why they blame her boys for the evil and not the two men who were with them. Jeb asks her to tell him who they were and if they had beards. Jeb says if she wants peace, she must give them names.

Doreen tells them the men's names -- Chip and Ricky.

Jeb asks Brady about Ricky and Chip, but he doesn't know anything. Jeb asks Taba to put out an APB. Jeb asks Brady if Ron and Dan are at the "dream mine" and if they should expect to be fired upon if they arrive. Brady nods.

There is a long lingering shot of the supposedly empty closet in the Lafferty house.

In a flashback, Erica is crying, and Brenda is on the phone, trying to get a ride to the pediatrician. Allen returns home, and Brenda berates him for spending time with his brothers up the mountain when Erica needs to go to the doctor.

They argue, and Allen slaps Brenda. He apologizes, but she immediately takes baby Erica and runs to another room.

Brenda's father and sister arrive. Bishop Wright stays with Allen while Brenda and Betty (her sister) take Erica to the doctor. Allen says he just wants to follow Joseph Smith's teachings as fully as possible so he can be with Brenda forever.

Bishop Wright makes some points about fundamentalists and then offers Allen some chocolate. Allen says chocolate has caffeine in it. Bishop wright convinces the bewildered Allen to eat a piece of chocolate, and he has one, too.

After the doctor, Erica's fever lowers while Brenda and Betty sit together at a McDonald's. Brenda says she is going to Missoula with Erica, where she can look for work in broadcasting while their grandparents help with Erica. Brenda says there is an evil presence in Allen's family, and she is scared of them.

Betty reminds Brenda of her vows and her responsibility to make her marriage work -- she has to take her problems to the church leaders before giving up.

Jeb interviews Betty and Bishop Wright, reassuring Betty that he would have said the same thing to Brenda. Josie bursts in, confused, thinking Rebecca is trying to kill her, even though she's just bathing her. Jeb calms his mother down, and she sits with the Wrights.

Josie and Bishop Wright make conversation while Jeb gets her a glass of water. Jeb reassures Betty that the Laffertys have no power over him.

Betty asks why the Laffertys would do this, and Jeb says he doesn't have all the facts yet, but Brenda was a powerful adversary. Betty gives Jeb letters Brenda wrote to her, warning him that it may put him in danger.

Jeb bathes his mother. Josie says the Devil is testing her before she is allowed to join her husband. Jeb says Heavenly Father already knows her worth. The girls get home. Jeb blesses his mother with the bathwater to rinse her hair.

The next day, Jeb and Taba drive. Jeb only got through one of the letters before falling asleep. Taba mentions a shoplifter with a beard at 7-11, but he had put Morris on it. Jeb laments that they have too much work and not enough manpower.

They see a billboard for pioneer days. Jeb remembers how much he loved pioneer days as a kid and then wonders if Brigham Young just lied so he could marry as many wives as possible.

Jeb reads another of Brenda's letters. In it, she recounts how she wrote to the highest office in the church, and they agreed to meet with her and Allen.

Allen begs the church leaders (including Stake President Stowe) for clarity about Brigham Young's revelations, but they downplay it, saying this is a meeting about his family. The men insist that they have been given God's authority on earth, but Allen gets angry at them and leaves, bidding Brenda come with him. She does not.

The church leaders commend Brenda on her courage. She pleads with them to grant her a divorce. The four elders give her a blessing instead. They charge her not to abandon her husband, as it is her calling from Heavenly Father to shepherd the Lafferty family back to the fold.

Jeb shows Brenda's letter to Allen, asking if he knew what had happened in there after he'd left -- if he knew that her calling came directly from the church.

Allen explains that he and Brenda had started to grow apart, as he had lost his faith and didn't want to express that to her. He blames himself for not being attentive to her and feels he could have stopped it.

Jeb says he is not charging Allen with any crime and therefore releasing him. Jeb asks Allen if he has anywhere to stay.

Allen correctly assumes his mother's house is still under investigation and asks if he can stay here at the station one more night, as Jeb is the only person who understands him, and he's afraid of being alone out there.

Taba calls in, saying he's down by the mine near Salem, and one of the gas station attendants says Onias buys gas every month and may have a trailer.

Jeb fears for Dianna's safety.

Another of Brenda's letters states that she buys butter and bread for the wives of her fundamentalist brothers-in-law. The church even sent missionaries from Salt Lake City to help.

Brenda sits down with the two missionaries and gives them the lowdown on the Laffertys, and they discuss the importance of modern values in Mormonism. She tells them to speak with the wives, not the men.

The missionaries make attempts on both Robin's wife and Sam's wife but to no avail. All the while, Brenda and Dianna look on from a distance.

Matilda comes to Brenda's door, accusing her of fornication and warning her about blood atonement. Dan has told her this. Brenda tries to figure out if Matilda is asking for help. Matilda tells Brenda that she risks her life by alienating her husband from her child.

Later, the Lowes and Brenda prepare to smuggle Dianna and her kids away to safety.

Dianna confides in Brenda, wondering what her life would have been like if she hadn't followed Ron into the church. Dianna tells Brenda she isn't safe, but Brenda is convinced it's her calling. She asks Dianna to write (without a return address). They hug goodbye, and Dianna drives away with her children.

Jeb and Taba discuss this, worrying that Ron may have already found Dianna.

Jeb visits Allen again, asking for his advice, wondering if Ron would have just let Dianna go. Allen says no, Ron wouldn't have ever moved on from her. Jeb confides to Allen that he is having dark visions. Allen tells him it's just his mind, removing itself from God.

Allen tells Jeb about a red book he had, hidden within the cover of a woodworking textbook, that tells a more accurate story of the Mormon people. He says it's probably in Jeb's evidence.

Jeb goes through all the evidence.

Ron reads his "revelation" to the School of Prophets -- that Dianna must return to the fold or be punished. Onias bids the prophets to listen to the voice inside themselves and ask if these are Heavenly Father's words.

They vote. Dan is first to raise his hand, then all the others do. Onias confirms that these are Heavenly Father's words, and that Ron is the One.

Jeb goes to the evidence room.

Jeb leaves the station.

Brigham Young looks out across the great valley that will one day be Salt Lake City, stating they will stay here.

Jeb and Morris review the footage of the shoplifter at 7-11. Morris and Jeb note that it looks like Jacob Lafferty.

Jeb sits in his car in his garage at home and looks through Allen's "textbook."

Taba drives up to the "dream mine."

Jeb cries while reading the room.

Taba gets out and sees a man with a headlamp and a hammer. He asks the man to turn it off. The man introduces himself as Prophet Onias, or Bob.

Onias mentions the little girl and her mother (Brenda and Erica) and says if Taba wants to talk to him, he'll have to leave the gun in the car and speak with him in his home.

Rebecca joins Jeb in the car, asking if he had nightmares. He shows her the book and tells her he is struggling. Rebecca starts to cry. She asks him to pray with her. He begins to pray but cannot continue.

She asks him to bear his testimony before their congregation to prove he still believes. He agrees. She gets out of the car and goes back to bed. Jeb breaks into tears and tries to pull himself together.
