3 WEEKS AFTER: Scenes of devastation the world over. Bodies litter the streets and fill the buildings. Makeshift memorials have been erected.

In a decimated New York City, a capuchin monkey named Ampersand roams the streets. His owner, Yorick, spraypaints messages for a woman named Beth. Yorick spies a precarious helicopter about to fall off a skyscraper and pulls Ampersand out of harm's way as the helicopter crashes to the ground.

THE DAY BEFORE: Yorick, an escape artist, teaches his student, Freddy, how to escape from a straightjacket while hanging upside down. Freddy informs Yorick that he will no longer be taking lessons.

In Brooklyn, Hero Brown is attending an AA meeting, with her friend Sam. Hero's phone keeps ringing and she has to leave the meeting -- it's her brother, Yorick. They meet, and he asks her for money, saying he wants to propose to his girlfriend, Beth. Hero discourages this, they argue, but she still gives him some money.

In Skiatook, Oklahoma, a woman builds a bomb for her boyfriend. When it's done, he tells her to hide, saying the guys who want to buy the bomb won't be happy to know a black woman built it. Unseen, she ducks out, jogging away as she detonates the bomb. This is Agent 355. She spots a dead buck on her run, and a black car arrives to pick her up. Her handler tells her that her next mission will be in DC to guard the President of the United States.

The President insists that Nora shoot a gun before they leave, and she obliges.

Kimberly Campbell Cunningham is being interviewed about her new book and her life philosophy. She recalls a conversation around bodily autonomy and how boys these days are not allowed to become "real" men. Kimberly is the mother of three boys, who tear around while she gets dressed and her husband sits around idly. The boys notice a dead, bleeding mouse in the corner.

Jennifer Brown arrives at the First Lady's birthday party and finds her husband there. Nora finds Jennifer, taking her to have a chat with the President. The President has Nora read Jennifer's statement out loud. They inform Jennifer about the "domestic terrorism" incident in Oklahoma earlier that day. The President tells Nora to stall the First Lady while he has a one-on-one with Jennifer.

Back in NYC, Hero is working a shift as an EMT with her partner, Mike. Mike informs Hero that he has told his wife about their affair.

Yorick makes gourmet grilled cheese for Beth. She complains about her job and gives him advice on his magic act. Beth is moving to Australia, and Yorick wants to go with her. He pulls out the ring and proposes. Beth is surprised, telling him he can't come to Australia with her. Frustrated at her response, Yorick lashes out, and Beth leaves, both professing that they love each other.

At a secure location, Agent 355 purges her previous identity and takes on a new one -- Agent Sarah Burgin, Secret Service. Her handler tells her he'll brief her about the 'threat' in a few weeks.

Christine, Jennifer Brown's assistant, is on a date but still goes to pick up her boss's dry-cleaning. Christine and her date are frightened by a rat in the alley, then suddenly a police horse without a rider gallops past them and into oncoming traffic. Next, a swarm of rats overruns the alley, causing Christine and her date to climb onto their car. Many of the rats seize and die on the spot.

Kimberly's boys run around the party, while Kimberly (the President's daughter) and Jennifer have a chat. Kimberly remembers Hero being drunk at the inauguration. Jennifer grabs her husband and takes him outside, where they have a chat about their marriage. Jennifer is ready to forgive, but her husband wants a divorce.

Nora returns to a messy house and has more issues with her son's birthday party. Nora's husband is supportive and comforting. When Mackenzie, their daughter, wakes and cries out for her dad, he goes to her.

Hero and Mike have just had sex in the back of the ambulance. Hero asks for details about how Mike's wife took the news about their affair. He steps out of the ambulance for some air and comes across a stray dog, barking and bleeding from the mouth. When he returns to Hero, she is getting dressed, having just read a text he received from his wife, making it clear he has not told her anything. Hero and Mike argue and it turns violent. Hero accidentally gashes Mike's neck open and he bleeds to death in her arms.

THE MORNING OF: Back in Washington, Agent "Sarah Burgin" reports for her first day of work, and Jennifer Brown waits patiently for the day's proceedings to begin.
