Mating season is finally here on Siren Season 2 Episode 13.
The mermaids' population is dwindling, and reproduction has become a necessity to prevent the species from going extinct.

But as viewers know, reproduction on land and reproduction in the water isn't the same by any means. In other words, things get sparkly very fast.
No, this isn't Twilight, and no Ryn isn't glowing because she's out in the sun.
Viewers may not have learned too much about the mermaid's mating season, but the show did do a good job of portraying how different bodily functions are for mermaids and humans.

Reproduction in the water isn't done for pleasure, but rather, it's something the mermaids see as vital to keeping their species alive.
Ryn: We are many seasons without babies.
Ben: No one’s gotten pregnant? How long?
Ryn: Very long.

Levi has stated many times both on Siren Season 2 Episode 13 and during previous episodes, that the men have no choice in the reproduction ritual.
Levi wants to be on land where men have choices. And we didn't miss the moment that Ben interrupted to say that women have choices too.
It's hard not to love Ben Pownall.
Sadly, Ryn isn't a huge fan of his at the moment. After learning that Ben's ancestor was responsible for slaughtering her kind, she seemed to look at Ben in a different light.

Ben shouldn't have been dishonest with her, but it's a hard thing to bring up and the choices of Ben's family are not his own.
Ryn: In water we kill for food…protection. Ben’s family kill because they are angry. Murder.
Ben: I am ashamed that I am related to someone who could do that.
Ryn: Yes. Shame.
Ben: I made a mistake! I should’ve told you.

But when it comes to Ryn's moralities, everything she's learned has come from Ben and Maddie. They're her moral compass, so Ben's dishonesty definitely threw her off guard.
How is she supposed to learn what's right and wrong when her teacher doesn't practice what he preaches?
Ryn has always understood the importance of family, but she hasn't been impacted by social normals or been told that there are sometimes shades of grey in life.

On one hand, it's refreshing that Ryn is experiencing the world without a mind full of preconceived notions.
But on the other hand, it's hard to wrap someone's mind around concepts that humans who have experienced life still struggle to understand.
Ryn: Why do humans do things like this?
Ben: Sometimes because they’re afraid. Sometimes…I don’t know…angry.

Ryn's personality and the way she adapts to life on land could even apply to nature vs. nurture.
Would she be different if someone other than Ben and Maddie had found her? What would have happened if no one found her and she learned to live life on land on her own?
I've loved Helen since Siren Season 1 Episode 1, but I haven't been a big fan of her family ever since Beth was introduced.
The obsession Beth and her relatives have with the mermaids is creepy, to say the least.
Beth: Our family is blessed to be joined by two full-bloods.

Being amazed and intrigued is one thing, but they were treating Levi and Ryn as if they were a god and goddess.
Things started to get out of hand when everyone begged Ryn not to leave and simultaneously bowed to her.
Is there something they know that we don't? Or are they just an intensely misguided group of people?

If I had to guess, I'd go with the second option.
Stray Thoughts:
- Ian has quickly gone from a potential ally to someone we need to keep our eyes on. He doesn't seem like the type of person who can be trusted.
- Where was Nicole on Siren Season 2 Episode 13? Her character has improved the show greatly, and even though it's only been one episode, you could feel the lack of her prescence. She's become such a vital character to the story, and hopefully she'll stick around for a long time.
- Now that Maddie has found the cameras Nicole planted, are they going to continue to let the military experiment on Ryn? The military watched Ben, Ryn, and Maddie have sex, and it was outright creepy and disgusting.
- Although he can be stubborn, Xander is the type of character who wants to make a difference and help others. Now that the North Star has been destroyed, the sheriff's department sounds like the perfect place for him.
