23 Best Cliffhangers of 2018

What's one thing you can always count on when it comes to television? Cliffhangers.

While they may be frustrating at times, they're an important part of the storytelling process and something every show must employ at some point to get the audience geared up for what's to come next.

2018 had no shortage of blindisding cliffhangers and the writers here at TV Fanatic have gotten together to give you our picks for the best of the year.

1. Power

During a season in which a main character and fan favorite had already bite the bullet, it was a shock to fans when another main character was presumed dead at the end of Power Season 5. But is Angela Valdes really gone? We are all patiently waiting for the summer of 2019.

2. How To Get Away With Murder

We all know the formula here but that never stops us from being gobsmacked every winter when the midseason finale hits! This year we learned who died in the snow (and who killed him!) and we got Gabriel Maddox's true identity. Who else can't wait to see where things go from here?

3. Station 19

The Station 19 Season 1 finale left the lives of nearly every character hanging in the balance. The firefighters were trapped in a raging Skyscraper fire and we had to wait all summer to find out if they would all make it out alive.

4. Grey's Anatomy

Mereidth and Deluca who are supposed to perform surgery are stuck in an elevator alone (after having a heated moment before). While Teddy and Owen are stuck in an elevator with Amelia just as they are about to tell her that Teddy is pregnant with Owen's child. Oh, Grey's!

5. This Is Us

The reveal of Jack's brother being alive on This Is Us Season 3 Episode 9 was a heck of a twist. Some of us are a bit divided on whether it was a good twist or not, but regardless, it was one heck of a cliffhanger that left the viewers' jaws on the floor.

6. Empire

On the Empire Season 4 finale, Blake’s crazy father shoots at Blake, Hakeem, pregnant Tiana & baby Bella. And now fans are left wondering if or who is going to die. WHAT?!

7. The Rookie

Nolan getting attacked by the brother of the criminal he killed on The Rookie Season 1 Episode 8 was shocking and unexpected. He had been struggling with the repercussions of using lethal force and wondered if there was something he could have done differently. Will Nolan end up going a non-lethal route to apprehend the attacker this time?

8. 9-1-1

9-1-1 Season 2 began with Maddie showing up in LA, continuing to run further away from her abusive husband, Doug. And just when she was feeling good and starting over, Doug showed up literally right outside her door. What's even more jaw-dropping than this cliffhanger is the fact that we have to wait until March to see what happens next!

9. New Amsterdam

Max has been struggling all season with his cancer diagnosis and his relationship with his wife. But during the New Amsterdam Season 1 midseason finale, he seemed to have found his own kind of peace with everything. That's why it was so shocking to see him collapse right before the credits rolled.

10. Chicago P.D.

The midseason finale of Chicago P.D. Season 6 had Antonio kill his daughter's kidnapper by pushing him out a window. With Ruzek and Voight having witnessed it, there's the question of how Voight is going to handle this situation and if Ruzek will go along with his plan.

11. Riverdale

Riverdale Season 1 ended with Hiram setting Archie up for murder was wild and exciting. The mostly useless Riverdale cops came and arrested the beautiful but dumb, beloved ginger in front of the entire school with Hiram smirking off in the distance like the handsome devil incarnate that he is.

12. The Resident

The Resident Season 1 Episode 9 ended with Conrad trying but failing to revive beloved patient Lily after Lane increased Lily's potassium leading to Lily's potassium overdose. By doing so, she not only killed Lily but set Nic up for it. It was an INSANE cliffhanger!

13. The Flash

Mid celebration after team Flash took down their season's "big bad," The Thinker, and Cecile and Joe had their baby, the mysterious girl who kept popping up comes knocking and says that she is Barry and Iris' daughter Nora from the future on The Flash Season 4 Episode 23.

14. Jane The Virgin

Michael's return on Jane the Virgin was a soapy cliffhanger not many of us saw coming. Is he alive? Is it really him? Is it a twin? There are so many questions to be asked and answered!

15. Good Girls

On the Good Girls Season 1 finale, Beth returns home to Rio holding her ex-husband hostage at the kitchen table. He realizes that she was the one who set him up to take him down, and he suggests that if she wants to be a badass leader of illicit activities she has to make a big move. She either shoots him or her ex-husband.

16. Lucifer

After using his wings to protect a discombobulated Chloe from a hail of bullets, Lucifer doubles back to take out Pierce/Cain. Lucifer gives an impassioned hero soliloquy while Cain dies with this Devil face when Chloe finally catches up and sees him in. His true form. Thankfully, Netflix picked up the series so it didn't end on that!

17. Timeless

As the Time team, missing their beloved hero in a hoodie mourn Rufus' loss, a Future gruff looking Wyatt and jacked Lara Croft looking Lucy appear in a time machine and asks "Do you guys want to get Rufus back or what?" The answer is obviously YES!!!

18. The Gifted

The Gifted Season 1 finale had a pregnant Lorna, Andy and a couple of others breaking away from their group of friends, lovers, and families to align with the Frost sisters. Their differing opinions over how best to achieve mutant justice made for a killer cliffhanger.

19. Blindspot

On the Blindspot Season 3 finale Jane waking up in a hospital bed after collapsing was crazy enough, but then it was revealed that she not only lost a couple of years of her memory, but she was back to being the cold, calculated, ruthless foot soldier Remi.

20. YOU

Joe was back to business as usual after his experience with Beck, but then that bell tinkled again, and in walked his newest obsession, except she wasn't new, she was his old presumed dead obsession Candace possibly back for revenge!

21. Sneaky Pete

After some suspicions, Julia meets up with Marius/"Pete's" parole officer Bagwell and asks "what's his name?" Thus she is on to the fact that Marius isn't really her cousin Pete and that he has been conning her and her family the entire time.

22. Chicago Fire

Matt Casey wakes up after sleeping with Naomi opens his bedroom door & discovers his entire apartment is on fire. They are trapped in his bedroom on Chicago Fire Season 7 Episode 9. He will definitely be using his firefighter knowledge to get them out.

23. Into The Badlands

Pilgrim finally gains access to the bunker and, together with Sunny, activates the machine which appears to give him the power to absorb the abilities of individuals with the gift, starting with Sunny's child. Pilgrim's eyes turn demon-black, as did the hearts of fans because it's been six months and still no word on when they'll be returning.
