Best of 2014: Worst Plot Twists

at .  Updated at .

The TV Fanatic staff picked the best of the worst plot twists for 2014.

1. Ezra Isn't A -- Pretty Little Liars

Worst plot twist was Ezra being A on Pretty Little Liars. It was yet ANOTHER fakeout. They gave us some really creepy scenes and a lair etc, only for it all to be for a book. They never stick to a bad guy! Now he's back in the fold helping out.

2. Tori -- Beauty and the Beast

It was a really wasted opportunity to utilize a female beast on Beauty and the Beast when Tori died. By using her as a romantic foil for Cat and Vincent instead of exploring what she could offer both as a lady beast and a new, genetic beast was a terrible waste. Instead she died in a horribly written plotline that should never have happened.

3. Catherine's Exit -- Hawaii Five-0

Fans were understandably upset when Catherine Rollins ditched boyfriend Steve McGarrett to stay behind in Afghanistan in the finale of Season 3 of Hawaii Five-0. Catherine's unceremonious departure was the latest in a line of female supporting characters to get written out of the series one way or another; the way this exit was presented, especially given Catherine's relationship with Steve, left a bad taste in fans' mouths.

4. Sookie Winds Up with Random, Faceless Dude -- True Blood

True Blood - After seven seasons of wondering who Sookie would end up with - will it be Bill? Eric? Alcide? Sam? - the answer ended up being a random, face-less stranger. First Alcide was killed off early in the season, then Bill killed himself (with Sookie's help) in the finale. Fans who stuck with the show through the end deserved better.

5. Daniel Dies -- Revenge

Killing Daniel Grayson on Revenge just when people were starting to like him again! He could've made a great ally for Emily, particularly against his mother and maybe even Malcolm Black but TPTB killed him off in what was the worst telegraphed death in series history. I'm hoping we come back from the hiatus to discover Agent Kate Taylor knocked Emily unconscious when they went over the rails and it was all a dream

6. Rachel Gives up her Dreams -- Glee

All Rachel Berry has wanted her entire life is to be a Broadway star. Why then would Glee think fans would accept that Rachel would give up her dream role of Fanny Brice to star in a TV show, something there has never been any indication she might want? It didn't feel true to the character and instead is a weak plot twist designed to get Rachel back to Ohio for the final season.

7. Beckett's Already Married -- Castle

Having Kate Beckett already be legally married was the worst plot twist of the series. First, it was totally unrealistic. She'd gone through background checks for both the NYPD and and the Attorney General's office. There's no possible way she wouldn't know she was legally married to a low-level criminal. Second, the story had her acting completely out of character. Since when does Detective Kate Beckett let someone push her around or let a sleazy ex bully her into breaking into someone's car? Finally, it made a mockery out of Kate's line about being a 'one and done' kind of a girl, an idea which fans have cherished since Castle Season 1 Episode 2. It was a horrible plot twist that I'm still trying to erase from my memory.

8. The Entire Finale -- How I Met Your Mother

How I Met Your Mother crammed multiple horrible plot twists into its series finale. First they killed off Ted Mosby's soul mate after we'd waited years for him to find her. Then they had Ted get back together with Robin after spending several seasons making it clear that they made much better friends than lovers. Finally, after spending the entire last season celebrating Robin and Barney's wedding, they had them get divorced ten minutes into the finale. These three plot twists have literally ruined my enjoyment of the entire run of the show.

9. Another Sister for Mer -- Grey's Anatomy

Meredith has yet ANOTHER sister? Not only that, but Maggie just happens to tell her "my mother is Ellis Grey" story to her own biological father, who of course decides to keep quiet. Seriously?

10. Soul Survivor -- The Following

The sole survivor of the Subway massacre was actually the villain! Honestly who didn't at least suspect that would be the case? It was pretty obvious to most fans that there was something fishy about her, so her reveal as the mother of the twins was not as shocking as it was probably meant to be.

11. Shay's Death -- Chicago Fire

The death of Shay on Chicago Fire was a really bad moment for the series. Since it started, there have been three deaths (of characters we knew) and all have been female. To rip away one of the most beloved characters and a friend to all felt ike a personal attack. It also set the stage -- if one more female is killed off the Chicago universe they're going to have hell to pay. None of the stories that were hoped to kick into high gear made an impression that equalled her loss.

12. Jess and Nick Break Up -- New Girl

Although Jess and Nick's breakup was ultimately a good thing for New Girl, the way it happened was too silly and too sudden. Sure, the couple had their tensions, but the realization that they were too different to be together seemed to come out of nowhere.

13. Sweets Dies -- Bones

Why did they have to kill off Sweets from Bones in such a bloody, awful fashion? Lance Sweets was a truly beloved character, and watching him die the way he did was horrendous. Even worse was watching as his corpse was being examined. The season 10 premiere of Bones was certainly a shock, but I wish Sweets would have been written off in a different way.

14. Mary was Raped -- Reign

Mary was raped as part of the Francis vs. Narcisse storyline and it was horrendous. There were so many different routes Reign could have taken to test the relationship of Francis and Mary, or to show how brutal things were for women during the time period that going this (extraordinarily fictional) route felt crass and unnecessary. The only thing of merit was how it further bonde the best two characters on Reign; Mary and Catherine.
