TV Entertainers Who Passed Away in 2016

We lost some beloved people during 2016.

All we can do now is honor their memories, remember what they brought to us through their talent and allow them to live on forever through their wonderful work.

1. In Memorium

To all of the people who have entertained us on television throughout the years and ended their struggle this year, we honor you.

2. Pat Harrington, Jr.

August 13, 1929 - January 6, 2016. Harrington is forever in our hearts as Schneider, the handyman from the apartment building on One Day at a Time from 1977-80, despite the fact his career was more far-reaching than that.

3. David Bowie

January 8, 1947 - January 10, 2016. Bowie starred in movies such as Labyrinth and The Hunger, as well as TV shows Dream On and The Hunger, but it was his musical library that brought to live many scenes in both movies and on TV that will continue to remind us every day of Bowie's many talents.

4. David Margulies

February 19, 1937 - January 11, 2016. Margulies is best known as Neil Mink from The Sopranos.

5. Alan Rickman

February 21, 1946 - January 14, 2016. Movie star Rickman also appeared on TV series, mostly in the UK, and some TV movies here in the US.

6. Dan Haggerty

November 19, 1942 - January 15, 2016 - Forever known as Grizzly Adams because of his many roles correlating to his role in The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams, Haggerty also had an uncredited role in Easy Rider, as well as another movie arriving in 2017, The Untold Story.

7. Glenn Frey

November 6, 1948 - January 18, 2016. Frey's own music and that with the Eagles are heard throughout many TV and movie scores. Frey was also an actor, first appearing as Jimmy Cole on an episode of Miami Vice titled "Smuggler's Blues in 1985, and then starring as Bobby Travis on Wiseguy in 1988, among a handful of other roles.

8. Abe Vigoda

February 24, 1921 - January 26, 2016. Vigoda began on TV in 1949, leaping onto Dark Shadows in 1969, then to his best known role as Det. Phil Fish on Barney Miller in 1974, from which he spinned off his own series Fish in 1977. He continued to work throughout most of his life.

9. Mike Minor

December 7, 1940 - January 28, 2016. Minor starred in 112 episodes of Petticoat Junction from 1964-70 as Steve Elliott. He also appeared in My Three Sons, The Beverly Hillbillies and All My Children, among others.

10. George Gaynes

May 3, 1917 - February 15, 2016. Gaynes started on TV in 1955, soon snagging roles on The Patty Duke Show and Bonanza, before starring in several successful miniseries in the '70s. The star of several Police Academy movies, he starred in Punky Brewster from 1984-1988, among others.

11. Tony Burton

March 23, 1937 - February 25, 2016. This real-life heavyweight boxer and Rocky actor, also left a mark on TV in small roles on shows such as Kijack, Baretta, Good Times, The Incredible Hulk, CHiPs, The Fall Guy and more.

12. George Kennedy

February 18, 1925 - February 28, 2016. Oscar Winner Kennedy starred with Paul Newman in Cool Hand Luke, as well as the Naked Gun series. He starred in the Airport movies and appeared on Gunsmoke, starred in Sarge and on 71 episodes of Dallas as Carter McKay.

13. James Douglas

May 20, 1929 - March 5, 2016. Douglas starred as Steven Cord on TV's Peyton Place from 1965-69, and because of the number of episodes per week, it amounted to a whopping 404 episodes total! Wow. Way to make your mark on a role.

14. Nancy Reagan

July 6, 1921 - March 6, 2016. If you were unaware, before she was the First Lady, Nancy Reagan was an actress, and appeared on series such as The Ford Television Theatre, 87th Precinct and Wagon Train.

15. Robert Horton

July 29, 1924 - March 9, 2016. Horton was a movie star who made his mark on TV when he landed the role of Flint McCullough on Wagon Train in 1957, a show on which he appeared for 188 episodes through 1962. He also starred in A Man Called Shenandoah from 1965-66 and his last role was on Murder, She Wrote in 1989.

16. Larry Drake

February 21, 1949 - March 17, 2016. Drake is best known to TV viewers as Benny, a character he played on L.A. Law from 1987-94. He later appeared in the movie Dark Man, as well as TV series Prey, Six Feet Under and more.

17. Joe Santos

June 9, 1931 - March 18, 2016. Santos starred on The Rockford Files as Dennis Becker from 1974-78, and later played policemen on Hardcastle and McCormick and Magnun, PI. Most recently, in 2004, he played Angelo Garepe on The Sopranos.

18. Morley Safer

November 31, 1931 - May 19, 2016. Safer showed us the way as a 46-year team member on CBS' news program 60 Minutes.

19. Peter Brown

October 5, 1935 - March 21, 2016. Brown had a prolific television career. He starred in Lawman as Deputy Johnny McKay for 156 episodes fromo 1958-1962, on Laredo from 1965-67 and 56 episodes, appeared on several soaps, including Days of Our Lives, The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful.

20. Ken Howard

March 28, 1944 - March 23, 2016. Although it wasn't his first series, Howard became well known as The White Shadow when he played Ken Reeves from 1978-81. Later, he had roles on Dynasty, The Colbys, Melrose Place, as Jordan's father Max on Crossing Jordan and on 30 Rock, among many others.

21. Garry Shandling

November 29, 1949 - March 24, 2016. Shandling's best known on television for his two shows, It's Garry Shandling's Show from 1986-90 and The Larry Sanders Show from 1992-98. Shandling also acted on many other series and in movies, including The Ben Stiller Show, The X-Files, Iron Man 2 and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

22. James Noble

March 5, 1962 - March 28, 2016. Noble first aired on TV in 1950, but got his firt recurring role on The Doctors in 1967. He was best known as Governor Eugene Xavier Gatling on Benson, which aired from 1979-1986.

23. Patty Duke

December 14, 1946 - March 29, 2016. Duke first knocked it out of the park as Helen Keller in The Miracle Worker in 1962. She later played the role of Anne Sullivan in a TV movie of the same name in 1979. Duke was well known for The Patty Duke show for playing identical cousins and remained a staple on TV until her death.

24. Merle Haggard

April 6, 1937 - April 6, 2016. Haggard's music littered the soundtracks of both film and TV for decades including the likes of Brokeback Mountain, Platoon, Jack Reacher, Mad Men, Ballers, Friday Night Lights (TV), Knight Rider and more.

25. Doris Roberts

November 4, 1925 - April 17, 2016. Five time Emmy winner Doris Roberts was known around the world for her role as Marie Barone on Everybody Loves Raymond, a role she played from 1996-2016. Prior to that, she was known as Angie Pedalbee on Dream On or Mildred Krebs on Remington Steel. In movies, she'll go down in history as Francis in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.

26. Prince

June 7, 1958 - April 21, 2016. Prince may have played himself in an episode of New Girl in 2014, but his musical catalog was a virtual cornicopia of riches for series to accompany the many scenes on both comedies and dramas alike over the years.

27. William Schallert

July 6, 1922 - May 8, 2016. Schallert was a character who appeared in literally hundreds of movies and television shows from 1947 through 2014, including The Patty Duke Show, Leave It to Beaver, Wagon Train, The Twilight Zone, The Bionic Woman, Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries, Melrose Place and True Blood among others.

28. Alan Young

November 19, 1919 - May 19, 2016. Although Young had a very prolific career voicing animation, he was most known for his role as Wilber Post on Mister Ed, a series about a talking horse than ran from 1961-66.

29. Muhammad Ali

January 17, 1942 - June 3, 2016. Ali not only was watched by millions during his fights that aired on TV, but also starred as himself on shows such as Diff'rent Strikes and Touched by an Angel.

30. Ann Morgan Guilbert

October 16, 1928 - June 14, 2016. Guilbert rose to fame as Millie on The Dick Van Dyke Show from 1961-66, and again on The Nanny from 1993-99 as Yetta Rosenberg. Lightning does strike twice!

31. Ronnie Claire Edwards

February 9, 1933 - June 14, 2016. Edwards made her mark with one role, as Corabeth Godsey on The Waltons from 1975-81.

32. Ron Lester

August 4, 1970 - June 17, 2016. Ron Lester starred on Popular soon after a similar role in the movie Varsity Blues. Years later, after losing all the weight that had helped make him a star, he died at the age of 45.

33. Anton Yelchin

March 11, 1989 - June 19, 2016. Yelchin made his name in film, but had many roles in television, including those on the Taken mini-series, Without a Trace and a starring role on Huff from 2004-06.

34. Garry Marshall

November 13, 1934 - July 19, 2016. Marshall was responsible for some of the greatest TV shows of the 20th Century, including Love, American Style, The Odd Couple, Angie, Happy Days, Mork and Mindy and Laverne & Shirley. He was known for directing movies such as Beaches, Pretty Woman and Runaway Bride.

35. Fyvush Finkel

October 9, 1922 - August 14, 2016. Finkel starred on Picket Fences as Douglas Wambaugh from 1992-96 and Boston Public from 2000-04 as Harvey Lipschultz.

36. Jack Riley

December 30, 1935 - August 19, 2016. Riley became well-known thanks to his role as Elliot Carlin on The Bob Newhart Show from 1972-78.
