Snowpiercer Ordered to Series at TNT

TNT is continuing to expand its scripted roster as it continues to refocus its brand.

According to TV Line, the latest series to join the ranks is Snowpiercer, which has landed a series order at the cable network.

The series is based on the movie of the same name which received critical acclaim upon its release in 2013.

It will follow the remaining members of the human race seven years after an ice age turns the world into a ball of ice.

The final group of people alive are aboard a giant train that makes its way around the globe.

Jennifer Connelly and Daveed Diggs are attached to star in the 10-episode first season.

“I’m a personal fan of Bong Joon Ho’s epic film, and jumped at the chance to honor his original vision, yet expand upon the world and characters with a diverse, award-winning cast,” said Sarah Aubrey, EVP of original programming at TNT.

“Science fiction is the perfect genre to examine issues of race, class, gender and natural resources with thought-provoking and exciting storytelling. Snowpiercer will explore those relevant issues while embarking on a wild, action-filled ride.”

Josh Friedman (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) wrote the pilot while Scott Derrickson (Doctor Strange) directed.

TNT has been changing focus in recent years, and that has resulted in the network getting rid of its older series that were mostly procedurals.

The final crime drama on the network, Major Crimes, came to a close after six seasons on the air on Tuesday night.

The network has drafted in younger-skewing series such as Claws, Animal Kingdom and Good Behavior to appeal to the younger demographics.
