After graduating from high school with nine classmates, the actor moved to San Diego. Once there, he was discovered by a modeling agent and earned a gig posing for Abercrombie & Fitch. The life of a soap opera star was born.
Bruening proposed to All My Children co-star Alexa Havins on the set of the show in a well-publicized, romantic act. They were married on June 5, 2005.
His first acting job was as Jamie Martin on the ABC soap opera, All My Children. Bruening later starred in the new version of Knight Rider as Mike Traceur and had various roles on Switched at Birth, Grey's Anatomy, and Ravenswood.In 2020, he began starring as Cal Maddox, a baseball coach, on Netflix's Sweet Magnolias.
