Supergirl Season 5 Episode 5 Review: Dangerous Liaisons

Critic's Rating: 4 / 5.0

So, James is really gone.

Do the remaining characters know that? Probably not, because there was no mention of him at all on Supergirl Season 5 Episode 5.

While this is far from surprising as James had gotten neglected over the years, it is still shocking that not even his sister talked about how he's doing in Calvintown given how perfect she has been since she arrived in National City.

Well, our heroes were just too busy trying to stop the recent string of contract killers from taking out anybody else. Did they accomplish their goal?

Kara and William decided to team up, albeit with some resistance from William, against a seemingly evil Andrea just as she was launching her VR contact lenses to the world.

But, how evil is she, really? And, does William actually have any substantial evidence incriminating Andrea?

The answer to the second question is no. As for the first question, the jury is still out.

Even with the reveal at the end of the hour, that Andrea is somehow tied to Leviathan, she seemed shocked that they were the ones behind the attack in Antarctica.

If Andrea were one hundred percent evil, we probably would have seen some sign of corruption from her by now.

Instead, she just seems like a person with terrible morals and bad intentions.

Leviathan Lady: You’ve really outdone yourself with those contact lenses. I hear they are as omnipresent as one of our plagues or floods.

Andrea: That was you yesterday?

Leviathan Lady: Leviathan is everywhere. And now a problem has come up. We need you to fix it. It’s Rip Roar.

William is sure that Andrea and her family are behind a series of killings and are corrupt as all can be.

But, as we saw in his VR where he confronted Andrea, he is leading with his heart, not his head. That is sure to get him into some trouble sooner rather than later.

As for the reintroduction of Leviathan, it is nice to see that some of the multiple villains on Supergirl Season 5 are working together. If they all had different agendas, it would be one big confusing trainwreck.

Now that the dots are connecting, the past few episodes are making more sense.

However, it still makes one wonder if Supergirl should have focused on either the Lena/Malefic storyline or the Leviathan/Andrea Rojas one.

They are sure to connect and intersect at some point, but it still makes for a cluttered show with too many villains.

Speaking of villains, we can add another one to the fold.

Rip Roar, AKA Russell Rogers, came onto the scene in getup similar to that of Doctor Octopus.

(Everyone knew he was Rip Roar from the moment he came on the screen, right? Hopefully, they were not trying to surprise us with that one.)

Brainy: That is the phrase. I’ve kept it top secret all day. You’re welcome.

Alex: Seriously?

Brainy: It’s from the oeuvre of Mr. Keanu Reeves.

Kara: Pop quiz hot shot?

William's former best friend, Andrea's ex-lover — who is this guy? How did he come into possession of those mechanical arms, and why is he working with Leviathan? Why does Leviathan want to kill him?

Too many questions, not enough answers Supergirl!

Well, all we know is that for some reason unbeknownst to us, Leviathan wanted to create a catastrophic flood that would kill millions, and Rip Roar was the man for the job.

Kara, J'onn, and Nia were their usual badass selves and took down the bad guy while taming the water.

Even so, the true hero of the day was the guy that saw the huge wave coming towards National City and, not unlike Paul Revere in the Revolutionary War, warned his fellow citizens by shouting "That's a huge wave!"

Thank you, random guy, you saved millions of lives that day.

Alex - Supergirl Season 5 Episode 5
(Robert Falconer/The CW)

It was Alex and Kelly's date-iversary — don't ask me what that is — and they were as cute as ever. Although, Alex's near-death experience with the tidal wave threw Kelly for a loop.

Even though it was sad to see Kelly break down and share her fear over losing another lover, it was also refreshing to see her crack.

Kara: I never would have thought Andrea was a criminal and I was convinced William was evil. How could I have been so wrong about both of them? And now with Obsidian tech everywhere, I mean, everyone’s just in these make believe worlds and it’s hard to know what’s real anymore. I just want some certainty.

J’onn: You know, my biggest takeaway from what happened with Malefic is when the world is uncertain, there’s one thing that’s rock solid. It’s the people who love you.

She has been almost too perfect since her character was introduced on Supergirl Season 4. Kelly is altruistic and kind, but everyone has flaws. It would be nice to see Supergirl dig even deeper into her character.

Anyways, now that they have matching motorcycle helmets, we better see Alex and Kelly riding Alex's bike soon or else what was the point?

Lena and Malefic came to an agreement that seemed to be the final push to Lena becoming a full-on villain.

It seemed hypocritical of her to be willing for someone to die to get what she wanted.

However, she betrayed Malefic as she could never hurt or kill anyone. Especially because Malefic wanted to kill his brother, someone Lena knows well.

She used Malefic for her advantage, and now she has had two people imprisoned in her lab.

Spider Brainy - Supergirl Season 5 Episode 5
(Dean Buscher/The CW)

Lena's situation is a complicated one. When you break it down to the basics, all she wants to do is prevent people from hurting other people. It seems innocent and pure-hearted, right?

Well, it is one thing to want to do good for the world and another to try to control it. Lena is tiptoeing back and forth between that line, and with every episode that passes, she leans more and more towards wanting control.

Lena: It is my mission to stop people from hurting each other. I will not kill.

Malefic: Perhaps. But, you’ve gone to extreme measures to bring me here. And now, you are at the precipice. Studying my mind is the key. I know of desperation, human. I know the depths you feel.

She wants to take people's agency from them — no matter the cost.

Lena still has time to see the light and realize the harmful connotations of her project. She just needs someone — cough, Kara, cough — to guide her.

Nia Nal - Supergirl Season 5 Episode 5
(Robert Falconer/The CW)

Kara's not all that innocent though.

Why would she keep William's secret from Nia? Hasn't she learned by now that it's not okay to lie to your superfriends?

Yes, Nia does work at CatCo with William, but that should give Kara even more reason to tell Nia that her boss might be a part of a criminal organization.

C'mon Kara, you should know better.
