Ofglen tells Offred she is a part of a network, an us who helps people like the one they watched get taken by the Eyes before the church that was being destroyed.
Back at the house, Nick tells Offred not to get too close to Ofglen. It's not safe.
Offred is worried when she's called before the Commander. They aren't to be alone together, yet she cannot say no, either.
The birthmobile is outside. Rita readies Offred. Everyone is praying for good news. Ofwarren, Janine, is giving birth.
Chances of a healthy baby are one in five if you can give birth at all.
June remembers arriving at the hospital when she was giving birth, a group of people surrounding the place, arms clasped while they prayed.
All of the wives are in the living room drinking coffee while the pretend pregnant woman pretends she's a part of things. It's totally bizarre.
Back in the day, June discovers she has given birth to the only healthy baby in the maternity ward. Two are in intensive care and the others are with God.
When Offred walks by the dining room, the wives treat her like she's beneath them, truly a piece of cattle. She shouldn't have a cookie because sugar isn't good for them. Isn't she well behaved? Little whores all of them. Still, you can't be choosey, you have to take what they hand out.
It's gross.
Offred leaves her bitten cookie by the bathroom sink like an offering.
Aunt Lydia leads the charge of Janine's birth. The birthing chair has two layers like everything else they do so the wife can pretend she has any part in the process.
You want to feel sorry for them, but the way they are all against each other, treating each other so poorly, it's difficult.
Aunt Lydia is chuffed to bits. The other Mrs. Waterford takes Janine's place in the bed ready to take her new baby.
June remembers an incident in the hospital when a mother mourning the loss of her child tried to make off with Hannah.
Ofglen couldn't find out anything about Offred's commander so suggests she just apologize for whatever it is. They like being forgiving. And don't trust Nick, a lot of the drivers work for the Eyes. Offred says what he told her about Ofglen. Ofglen agrees trusting anybody is dangerous.
Janine probably gets a little too close to her new daughter that isn't her daughter.
The Commander wants to play a game with Offred. Scrabble. She's so happy, touching the letters and seeing them in front of her that she gets tears in her eyes.
It's a close game, 386 to 383, he wins by 3.
She thanks him for the game and he shakes her hand goodnight. Back in her room, she laughs like a schoolgirl with a wonderful secret.
Offred is living on top of the world, excited to share with Ofglen about the scrabble game and that the Commander is going to Washington DC. But Ofglen is gone. She goes from wanting to sing Simple Minds in some Breakfasty Club way to being squashed, the breath taken right out of her lungs.
