Big Little Lies: A First Look at HBO's Star-Filled Series

at .  Updated at .

Liane Moriarty's 2014 novel, Big Little Lies, does the impossible.

It takes some very serious subject matter and surrounds it with comedic overtones.

Carol Memmott of The Washington Post reviewed the novel and noted, "It takes a powerful stand against domestic violence even as it makes us laugh at the adults whose silly costume party seems more reminiscent of a middle-school dance."

This sounds like just the right kind of material for David E. Kelley bring to life on HBO.

This limited series will follow the lives of three women, Jane, Celeste and Madeline, who all meet taking their children to kindergarten. They strike up a fast and lasting friendship that includes sharing their deepest secrets.

How close they will get will only become known by reading the novel or watching the series. You know, I just might do both.

Assuming the series will be faithful to the book, here's a bit about what we might find out about the characters.

Jane (Shailene Woodley) doesn't know who the father of her child is, as he was conceived after a violent one-night stand. She's actively looking for him, though.

Her son, Ziggy, is accused of bullying children on the first day of class, something she clearly doesn't understand.

Madeline (Reese Witherspoon) is having problems dealing with the fact her daughter from another marriage is bonding with her ex-husband's new wife.

Madeline's friend, Celeste (Nicole Kidman), has twins who also attend the school.

She's being abused by her wealthy banker husband, Perry (Alexander Skarsgard).

There's nothing all too pretty about the lives of these three women, but apparently what they find in their friendship with each other makes up for that.

But even their friendship isn't going to keep them from some sort of disaster. That much is clear from the clip.

Who knows what lies out there beneath the surface?

Big Little Lies will also star Laura Dern, Adam Scott, James Tupper and Zoë Kravitz which will be coming 2017.

HBO Quotes

Every successful business is full of people who spent money nurturing unremarkable talent.

Eric

Eric: Why are you here then?
Harper: Well, it's not a very political answer, but I think mediocrity is too well hidden by parents who hire private tutors. I am here on my own.
