Welp, FBI: International Doesn’t End with a Bang, Just More Wes

The only thing worse than a network canceling a hit series is when that series doesn’t deliver an acceptable ending.

It feels like they slapped the audience in the face twice, and that’s precisely what it’s like for viewers tuning in to say goodbye to FBI: International.

Many fans are still livid about the series signing off. We’ve lamented how losing two spinoffs in favor of a third has sent viewers into a tailspin.

FBI: International Fumbles Finale

But the very least that FBI: International could do, given the circumstances, was deliver a final hour that gave viewers a modicum of peace, closure, and the feeling that if they must bid farewell to a series that they loved, at least it happened in style.

I’ll give it to FBI: Most Wanted. At least there was a notable shift in their later installments, and the writers started working in bits and pieces to set up a serviceable finale that would wrap up the arcs of all of its coveted characters.

By the final moments of the series finale, they played it safe, cheesy but endearing enough by establishing that the Fugitive Task Force was Remy’s family.

Everyone made natural life choices that felt like they were entering new stages, and while we wouldn’t be joining them, they’d all be okay.

International had the time to do that.

As far as we know, the series was still filming until the beginning of May, so there was ample time between the cancellation news in March and as recently as this month to produce a serviceable and satisfying conclusion to the series.

Unfortunately, it did not.

They leaned into one of the most polarizing aspects of this new season, Wes Mitchell. The majority of the finale focused on the Fly Team’s new leader as they juggled a case in Tokyo and his personal life, resulting in a cliffhanger in which few of us had any real investment.

Despite Jesse Lee Soffer’s best efforts, Wes has never fully taken off as a character to a point where he was anything less than polarizing at best for most of the viewers.

He has a particular style that doesn’t appeal to everyone, and he epitomizes “acquired taste.”

Benching OG International Characters Was a Poor Choice

Spending the entire final hour of the series on one of the newest characters while essentially benching actual original members of this series: Vo and Raines, was an egregious oversight on the writers’ part and truly puzzling.

Regardless of how people feel about Vo and Raines — hell, maybe there are viewers out there who don’t care for one or both, I don’t know — for nostalgia sake, it would’ve made the most sense to center them more in the series finale, not sideline them for more Wes adventures and angst.

Worse yet, the one arc Vo and Raines had going for them was learning which of them would get promoted, and the finale didn’t even have the decency to give us that conclusion.

Instead, in an attempt to be cheeky, presumably, or not have to commit in any way, they leave us in the dark, instead opting for a final shot of the two best friends holding hands as they await the news.

Why? With ample time to develop something halfway decent and satisfying, why didn’t they pivot just a little?

An Unforgettable Finale is an Insulting Farewell to Fans

Would it have hurt anyone to restructure the finale and give the other characters a hint of closure and fans, too?

Taking Wes to Tokyo was exciting because the series traditionally stayed within Eastern Europe. I understand how heading to Asia in this capacity was a bold, finale-worthy move.

However, half of the Fly Team remained back in Budapest and barely had screentime. This was such a disservice to fans who tuned in for one last hurrah with their favorite characters on a series they loved.

By the time Wes came face-to-face with the little sister he had never known, I could barely muster up more than a frustrated sigh.

It was just another episode of FBI: International, The Wes Chronicles. Except it wasn’t supposed to be — how unfortunate.

I missed the original cast soooo badly that I started gathering work clothes. I loved the cohesiveness of the original cast because each team member was unique and brought something different to the show. Wes, Vo, Raines, and faceless nameless characters! Chicago PD is my favorite tv show and trust me that Jesse was playing his character Jay Halstead from that show. Even Jay’s mannerisms and speech cadence. Fans deserved better for the series finale. Grade D and being generous.

@LA Girl, 100 percent! Always felt like it was just Jay on FBI international. Was so disappointing for me. Series finale left a lot to be desired. Totally agree with Jasmine's synopsis. Ugh!

@LA Girl, I always struggled with Soffer joining FBI International so soon after Chicago PD because he feels like a more extreme version of the same character. They didn't even have him change his appearance, hair, or the way he dressed to differentiate between the two.

I have adored Jesse Soffer ever since he was Will Munson on As the World Turns. I loved that he joined FBI: International, and I was enjoying getting to know Wes, but this episode was not the right choice for a series finale. FBI: International was an ensemble show, and we should have seen the team working together in the series finale. Whist I enjoyed this story in the episode, and Jesse was great, it would have been much more appropriate as a standalone episode earlier in the season. As as aside, I am still pi$$ed that they cancelled this show!

@Sweet Amy, yeah, it's clear that this was their season finale and they just let it serve as a series finale, but it still would have bugged me that they devoted an entire finale to Wes and benched the rest of the team. To me, finales should be the one time when your full ensemble is used anyway, not just once person.

Jasmine, I agree with you was not a good series finale, given enough time, could have changed course, I suspect, when show agreed to shoot in Tokyo, could not change the story, for money reasons, FBI Most Wanted and The Equalizer, had better endings, because, they did not leave New York City to shoot. I never been fan Jesse Lee Sofer, going back, when he was on As The World Turns. I wished picked different actor or actress for the leading the team.

@Jasmine Blu, I agree, they should have shown, who caught promoted, I enjoyed the first three season, original was still best, I am still mad, did not keep Damian, I really enjoyed his character.

@sarah, I get that they had to keep the Japanese storyline because they went all out on securing the location. But they still had ample time to work in other scenes or even dialogue to address lingering series finale things and wrap it up better.

One simple thing would've been actually sparing an additional minute to show us who got promoted.

I keep arguing with people about this because I guess they're willing to extend more grace to the writers than I am, but it's just such an oversight.

I felt like they wrote a season finale, not a series finale. If the show was coming back, waiting til fall to find outbwhi was promoted would have been acceptable.

What should have happened IMO was similar to what happened on MW. Wes should have left to be with his half sister and Vo taken his place, while Raines took the other job.

Also, why start a relationship between Tarlte and Wes and then do nothing with it?

That's exactly what they did, and it made no sense for them to do that when they knew two months beforehand about the cancelation. Production ended earlier this month. By then, you knew the show was dead and buried, so why not restructure it to suit the series finale for fans? Ugh.

That's exactly what should've happened, instead we have whatever the heck that was. I just scratched my head the whole time. It's like they gave up.
