Recap

Dan is riding the El, dosing in and out. His hand is dripping blood. A boy looks over the seat and says hi before his mom takes him by the hand.

Dan pulls a mangled receipt out of his pocket. A bar. His arm is sliced open and there is blood in his cut.

He's banging on the door of the bar, hoping that his keys are there. The bar owner took them from him. When Dan grabs them, he thinks some are missing. The guy says not it.

Someone has been driving his car. When he gets in, the seat is all the way up to the steering wheel and there's an unknown cassette in his stereo.

Dan's son is playing video games. Freddy's not pleased with the state of things, and it seems wrong that Dan's dragging him about eating cereal instead of something healthier.

The cassette isn't Freddy's. Someone moved the books in Dan's bookcase. Harper is across the street, watching them start their day.

Abby asks for some clips. Kirby had been asked to put a hold on them, but she hands them over. Abby asks questions, including how long Kirby has been working with them and whether Dan has been drinking. He previously took a long leave of absence to deal with it.

Dan thinks Kirby has pulled too many potential cases, but she's done everything to weed them out.

Dan and Kirby visit the evidence archives to sort through what has been uncovered so far. They get to work

Harper is reading the paper in a little shop where some girl is trying to get beer. She's underage, and she asks Harper to do her a favor. She pushes him to do her this favor. He pushes her to take them, leaving by the side door. But there is no side door. Harper follows her.

It's a storeroom, and she's filling up her bag with more beer. Harper tells her he knows everything about this store, but it's the first time he's noticed her. That makes her uncomfortable.

It makes her even more uncomfortable when he begins following her. She's trapped. Nowhere to go. He finds it fascinating that although she knew that she should circle back, she still kept moving. He said it should have taken them years to get there, but why would he follow her any further? She can't even find the door.

So many unsolved murders and assaults over the years. The faces and injuries rush by.

Harper is in a different store, tracking Freddy. He says he worked with Dan at the Observer years ago. Harper just makes people uncomfortable, insinuiting himself onto people. What a terrible existence.

After being uber creepy and insulting Dan, Harper gives Freddy a kitkat.

When Dan returns to the archives, Kirby isn't there. He begins walking around calling her name. She's in one of the aisles with her evidence box, her evidence all around.

Kirby puts her stuff back. Dan has to get dinner going for Freddy. He sees that she took something. Since it was left inside her, she calls dibs. It's a tense moment that ends in Dan's favor.

They head to Dan's house where Kirby looks around and asks questions about his personal life. He thinks she needs to call Marcus. He's always an afterthought.

Dan looks at Kirby's journal, wondering why she keeps notes on basic facts she already knows. She tells him how she felt after leaving the hospital. She needed a way to navigate.

Dan accepts her answer and continues with business.

Kirby has found a lot of similarities, particularly with what was left inside each victim.

Kirby wakes on Dan's couch, finding Freddy making lunch in the kitchen. The criminal photos are scattered around. He's seen worse.

Dan takes evidence to Abby and reveals his source. She blows up at him. If Kirby won't go on the record, the story is gone. A survivor going after a serial killer. That's the story.

Kirby asks Marcus to help her get some photos. Together, they try to find a closeup of one of the victims. When they find one, Marcus realizes what Kirby and Dan have been doing, and he's not happy about it.

Marcus says that Dan's a fuckup who chases stories, never breaking them. Dan will run right through her to get to nowhere because he never finishes anything.

Harper is at Dan's house rifling through papers. He goes back to the bookcase and moves the books again.

Harper's in the kitchen when Freddy gets home. When raiding the fridge, the papers Kirby had put up there earlier fall down. Harper drops themon the floor and leaves by the back door.

Dan tries to get Kirby to see the benefit of being the focal point of the story. If she wants this to play, she has to speak for the other women. She reminds him of her notebook and says when she woke up, she had no idea where she was. Nobody should listen to her.

Dan lays out his case.

Marcus delivers the photos, and the object next to the body belongs to Jinny.

Marcus drops by Dan's desk. He warns Dan away from Kirby by telling Dan not to let down Kirby.

Marcus gets angry, grabbing his coat and heading to the bar. He's wasted, singing and asking the DJ to play songs for him, then dancing and screaming and having a good time. Ish.

Up next are drugs and the world becomes a mess around him. He's on the floor, dancing, drinking, and doing everything to excess.

Harper is watching him from the bar.

Kirby reaches out to Jinny, asking questions. She doesn't know any of the names that Kirby mentions. As she says the names, Kriby turns toward the door. Her hair has grown. She's changed things. She decides to tell Jinny that the photo is from 1972. Jinny gets spooked and leaves.

Harper follows Dan. Dan falls down the escalator, and glass tears up his arm. Dan recognizes him as Mr. Daily News. Harper decides to take the same El.

Harper tries getting close to Dan by saying that he has a kid who he never leaves on his own. That's why he's spooked about the story that Dan is looking into.

That's how Harper finds out there was a survivor.

Harper pushes Dan and pulls him back from the brink as if he did him a favor.
