Recap

A woman begs for forgiveness in water when some sort of monster appears.

She screams as her sister runs away.

A doctor arrives at a house to care for a man (Cora’s husband).

He wants to operate on the man without the man’s permission, with Cora’s consent, but she denies it.

The next morning, she wakes up to her husband having died overnight.

She tells a young boy, possibly her son, definitely his son that her husband died.

As she prepares for the funeral, we see flashbacks of her husband choking her with a necklace and hurting her.

At the funeral, she meets the doctor once again, and they embark on a walk.

She talks about the river they are walking over, listening to its rumbling from a grate.

They talk about the natural history of eels and discuss surgery and the feelings behind cutting someone open.

She discusses her freedom from her dead husband with her maid.

She attends a surgery of the doctor’s, where many people are watching.

Cora gets more and more fascinated with a mystery her friend brought her about a serpent in Essex.

She plans on heading to Essex to investigate further.

The doctor tries to stop her, but she is headstrong.

She immediately starts gathering as much information as she can on the serpent.

She runs into a man trying to help a sheep out of a bog and helps him save it.

He tells her there’s nothing to see concerning the serpent and that she should go home.

The girl with the missing sister sacrifices a bird to try and get her sister brought home to her.

The man is revealed to be a vicar.

The doctor likes Cora, but doesn’t like that she’s off in Essex.

He gets a new surgery to perform, one that a nurse was very excited about.

They lost the patient.

He wants to continue to try and perform some not-so-safe surgeries.

He vows to go to Essex to take a vacation.

He visits Cora and heads to her room.

She’s excited to see him, but her maid an son are not as excited.

The vicar tries to quell the townsfolk’s anxieties about the beast, claiming it isn’t real.

Cora arrives at the Vicar’s house, and has a discussion with her wife.

When he arrives home, Cora is surprised that he’s the same man from the marsh/bog.

Cora stays the night at the vicar’s house so that she can see the church and serpent images on one of the pews.

Cora gets a harsh welcome from people in the vicar’s church, with many people staring.

Cora attends the service and has some flashbacks to her abusive husband, which cause her to get emotional.

A man bursts in from the search for Gracie (they found a cross), and the entire parish heads out to help the search.

Cora joins the search but gets a bit separated from the pack.

She sees a girl off in the distance and runs to her to see the girl weeping over Gracie’s body.

She calls the people over, and they all gather around the girls.

Many people are convinced that the serpent (some refer to it as the devil) has come.

The Vicar and Cora share a terrifying stare, as they both realize the seriousness of the events.
