Game of Thrones Season Finale Breaks Series Ratings

It turns out HBO viewers aren't remotely afraid of winter.

The Game of Thrones Season 2 finale garnered 4.2 million viewers on its first 9 p.m. run last night (5.1 million including repeat airings), becoming the first episode in series history break the four million mark for its initial offering.

That's a 38% increase over the first season finale.

Overall, Game of Thrones Season 2 averaged 3.7 million viewers per week. It's already been renewed for a third season, with showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss signed on for two more.

UPDATE: Count Longmire in as a record-breaker! This drama debuted to 4.1 million viewers and became that network's most-watched scripted premiere of all-time.

love this show, in general HBO always gives almost movie like quality to their shows but this and Boardwalk Empire are probably my favs. the quality and consistency of atmosphere in every ep is just mesmerizing.
he Daenerys is by far my fav character. i can not wait for the next season. i am actually surprised that i love this so much since i am not a fantasy fan at all and i didn't read the books, but the actors and the story telling here is positively addictive.

Seeing as how quickly HBO renewed the show for season 3 (not a week after season 2 premier) maybe they'll go super-early and renew for season 4 this week!
