Rookie Blue Review: Breaking Up the Band

at . Comments

"I Never" was exactly how I felt after watching the season finale of Rookie Blue - and yet, in an odd way, it all made sense.

The return of John Gray from the season premiere brought things full circle as everyone had to hunt the crazy pedophile once more. Only this time around, the officers of the 15th were all in very different places both personally and professionally.

Andy Struggles

Sam and Andy. At the start of the season Sam was hurt that Andy hadn't contacted him during their suspension. Oh, how things had changed.

Honestly, Sam hides his feelings so well sometimes that it's easy to see things from Andy's point of view. He did look rather chummy with the blond at the Black Penny and Oliver seemed more worried about Andy after her confrontation with Gray than Sam did.

Of course, Sam's been going through Hell since Jerry's death. He's handled it terribly but that doesn't mean he hasn't been suffering. There's so much we don't know about Sam. He really is a mystery and I hope we get more insights into the man in Season 4.

But I had to side with Andy when she brushed off Sam's I love you. It could have easily been the adrenaline rush of watching his ex-girlfriend juggling a grenade.

As big an admission as that was for Sam, it came across as too little too late.  If he thought those three words could erase weeks of hurt and confusion, he was wrong.

What was even more satisfying to hear than the I love you was the begging that quickly followed because it was great to see that Sam finally figured out what he wanted and said he was willing to work for it.

Oliver. Oh, Ollie looked too cute when the blond was hitting on him and, more than that, he looked so darned uncomfortable.

As hurt and angry as he was with his wife, the last thing he really wanted to do was move on. Sam gave him some good advice and I've got my fingers crossed that Ollie gets his family back next season.

Chris and Denise. Chris obviously loves being a dad and that's no surprise... but a transfer to Timmons? Ollie's right. He'll be bored to tears.

I've never been to Toronto but there have to be suburbs, right? Couldn't they find a place where Debbie feels safe raising their child but Chris could still commute to his job? It's called compromise and if these two are going to raise a child together they should really consider it.

Luke and Traci. I've been thrilled with how much Luke has been supporting and encouraging Traci. Not that Jerry didn't do the same, but their personal relationship made it difficult for him to see Traci's full potential on the job.

Luke has become the friend and mentor that Traci needs. He believed in her enough to recommend her for the task force but when she couldn't drop everything to make it happen he made sure she put it in perspective in this Rookie Blue quote

You have something more important in your life. Don't apologize for that. | permalink

Gail and Nick. This one broke my heart almost as much as Sam and Andy. Gail has looked happier than I think we've ever seen her. The travel books were just a way of distracting herself from the possibility of losing her job. Unfortunately I'm afraid that Nick took it more seriously.

But that kiss he gave her was pretty serious and made me think Nick was in this for the long haul.

And then everything changed.

Now I know they had their orders, but how do you just walk out on your life one night and not tell the person you love that you're going undercover for weeks or months?!?

Nick and Gail are in a relationship. What is she suppose to think when he disappears on her? I'm sure there's some sort of cover story planned but leaving her like that was just cruel.

Speaking of cruel, was Andy really that angry at Sam that she could simply walk out of his life without a word? I understood not wanting to be the girl who gives up a great opportunity over a guy, but he just told her everything she's wanted to hear.

I'm not saying she shouldn't have taken the job. I just have to believe she could have given him a heads up if she really wanted to. However, since Andy always follows the rules, it does make sense that she'd do exactly what Luke told her to do, even though I hate it.

A few side notes I just have to mention…

  • Does Andy's chummy relationship with her Mom bug anyone else? It just feels as though Mom should have had to work harder for that privilege.
  • Gail comparing herself to Yoko Ono really had me laughing.
  • Chris talked to Oliver about moving to Timmons before telling Dov. The guy's his best friend, partner, and roommate.  WTH?!?
  • Loved it when Dov said, "Wait, seriously, I'm the only one who's never had sex with anyone from 15?" Is Rookie Blue the cop version of Grey's Anatomy?

So... do you think Andy's angry or just playing by the rules? With Sam and Andy, Nick and Gail, and even Chris and Dov all in danger of being separated, what can we expect from Rookie Blue in season 4?  Summer of 2013 seems a long, long way off.

Whoever wrote the part where Nick and Andy get to be on a secret task force kinda sucks at being realistic. I get they need someone at 15 Division, but really a really new rookie & previously suspended rookie? And the suspension was for breaking someone's cover?
Besides. I love Gail and Nick together. Andy and Nick are just friends. Gail and Sam are just friends too.
And I like Luke. Not dating anyone on the show right now though. But I like the thing he said to Traci. I don't think the task force thing is his fault. And hot. And then Chris moving makes me sad. Hopefully he won't. Hopefully he didn't tell Dov because he really isn't going to do this. And I hope Oliver gets back with Zoe. However this week it was fun to watch him. And the Andy & Mom thing sucks. I don't like that. It sounds fake too. Andy is too careful to let her mom in so fast.

Admittedly, I am new to this show. I tried watching the pilot or so back in the day, but I couldn't get into it. Times have changed and I've seen all 3 seasons recently. First and foremost, I don't like Andy for the same reason I'm not a fan of Meredith on Grey's. The writer's are trying too hard to make her a 'hero', while at the same time she and Traci [rather than Christina] are sleeping with their supervisors. What I've liked is Gail - and the S3 finale was sadistic. Nick disappearing without a word, the same way he left their engagement. Just like the situation with Chris and Dov, she's alone again with no one. Despite her general Yoko-ness

I enjoyed this episode but it was not the great finale I was looking for.
Where to start.... Luke and Traci together that feels wrong to me. I think it was strange Luke was learking in the hall and offered Andy the job, epically with the suspension 3 months prior, I totally think that was unrealistic. Do you really think Luke would try to keep Sam and Andy apart? Luke did care for Andy and I like to think despite the one time cheat that he care/cares about her feelings and wants what is best for her.
Nick I love you and I think the break up coach and bond formed between them then was hysterica to watch but Andy can not hook up with another cop in 15 right now! Biddies that kiss with Gail was so passionate and Andy is her friend!
Oh poor Gail she is going to be hell to deal with over the next few months!
As for Sam, Sam your words melted my hart but it did feel a little like you were scared of loosing someone else. I like the lookerroom chat, where Andy gave him a pass on the " I love you" but when he made the joke about the bones in the body I could not help feel a little put off and like he was wanted to joke his way out of the feeling stuff. I personally wan to see him feel and show some emotion.
Andy, your Taking advise from a women not in a relationship who has a history of running away from them, come on really! I do get the whole girl power go out and experiance life feeling after a bad break up and I know Andy is not a rule breaker unless it comes to Sam. So to get myself through the long winter months, I am going to pretend that when Andy gets undercover that she late one night will sneak out and call Sam just once to tell him she is ok, that she his hurt but loves him, and that she just needed some more time to heal and regroup so they can start fresh again in a few months....I know keep dreaming....but I have to keep the hope alive some how!
To the new female rookie that is rumored to be joining 15, watch it, Sam is taken, do back off.

Great review. I agree wholeheartedly with most of it!!

I think Chris will stay at Precinct 15. I also see Traci and Luke getting together in the end. I hope that Oliver and Zoe ( I think that is her name) reconcile if that is what he truly wants!

This was a great finale! I am still getting over it!
I knew that Andy would not turn down the undercover assignment, even with Sam professing his love and the sweet words he said to her in their last scene together. She is still hurt and she felt "running away" was the best thing to do but she will regret it as when Season 4 starts, 6 months has passed and with Sam not knowing where Andy when he will have sadly moved on to Marlo (still need to figure out how I can get that
Nick took the task force job as he assumed Gail would be put on permanent probation and decided to leave before she did. I am Team Sandy but I really like Nick too, you can tell that Andy and Nick will become an item while away.

Sam has a lot of work cut out for him. His actions of affection seemed determined by this life changing situation. It's like he realized he could lose Andy and spilled his guts. That in itself could be a double edge sword. As much as Sam tried to reach out to Andy before, he barely touched the surface. He was holding a lot of pain inside him. I believe we need to get more insight into to who Sam is and what makes him think. His decisions would always be compromised if he chooses to act out of impulse and always at the last possible moment.

I don't like the fact that Nick and Andi are asked to disappear without a trace to go undercover. If that was for real, then anyone with any connection to humanity would not be keen on doing it. Regarding Diaz going to Timmins (yeah, I grew up there), I find it hilarious that they have the city being dangerous stereotype down. Loads of us found Toronto to be "dangerous". As for the comments about policing in Timmins to be boring, they do have their moments and you can never forget that they have bears in town, something you don't get in the city.

Leesa--good call, I agree completely! That's what bothered me the most about the finale. Not that she accepted the job but the fact it was even offered to her in the first place! Less than a year ago she was on a 3-month suspension for compromising an undercover investigation, there's no way in hell any higher-up would have approved her for this op!! I mean really, I swear Luke lurking in the back heard the whole conversation w Sam and that's why he offered that minute. And Nick? No offense but he's the newest rookie and he gets the spot?? So unrealistic in my opinion. Yes I wanted a Sam & Andy reconciliation but I would've been disappointed if she forgave him that easily after all he's done. Wouldn't seem genuine. And yes Claire bugs me, she hasn't earned it for me either. Ugh. Disappointed overall, they better make the season four return worth it for this mess!

To Sasha and Maaike, Yes, you're right. I meant Denise. Thanks for catching that. I've gone ahead and corrected it.

Rookie Blue Season 3 Episode 13 Quotes

Wait, seriously, I'm the only one who's never had sex with anyone from 15?

Chris: I feel like someone's breaking up the band.
Gail: Now that's just silly because we're not a band. But if we were, I would be Yoko. So you all should be celebrating.
