In a word: WOW.

Dexter and Homeland both kicked off new seasons on Showtime last night, and neither disappointed in the ratings department.

DEXTER garnered 2.4 million viewers at 9 p.m., a 10 percent increase over last year's opener and the highest-rated premiere in series history.

HOMELAND, fresh off a history-making evening at the Emmys, brought in an all-time high 1.73 million total viewers, 60 percent more than its series debut and the most-watched Season 2 premiere of any program in Showtime history.

Combined, the dramas delivered the network its most-viewed Sunday night. Ever.

It's about time Showtime woke up and smelled the coffee that HBO's been drinking for years with unprecedented success! Yes, Showtime, you really CAN produce good programming if you set your mind, budget and good writers to it. I never paid for Showtime until Weeds and Nurse Jackie pulled me in and now I am hooked with Homeland and Dexter, more the former than the latter; in fact, Homeland probably is the best drama on television, though it has several excellent contenders for the spot. Regardless, whoever got the ball rolling at Showtime deserves high praise, for it is now well worth the price paid for top notch entertainment. It's still no HBO but at least it's off the back roads and finally in the fast lane with its competitor...Keep it up!
