Beauty and the Beast Review: FINALLY

by at . Comments

"Tough Love" gave us two things:

  1. An overabundance of screen time for the incredibly-difficult-to-warm up-to Heather.
  2. The wonderful, intensely beautiful moment we've all been waiting for: THE KISS.

I'm going to guess that I wasn't the only Beastie bemoaning the hour, wondering why we were being punished with the dual bitchichiness of a Heather/Tess tag-team.

The writers must have known that the only way they would be able to redeem themselves after so much negativity was to finally give the viewers what we wanted. Before we get there, let's check out what drove the rest of the episode.

Cat Makes an Introduction

Heather was being a verifiable nutcase when it came to Vincent. Starting the evening they planned to gently introduce him into the fold and showing up in a cocktail skirt was rude. If you set the dress code, don't break it. Another note of warning might be to keep to the original guest list. She knew how concerned Cat was about her meeting Vincent, but she invited Darius, who neither Cat nor Vincent knew, to eat with them. Not an endearing quality.

Gosh, it was so uncomfortable watching Vincent trying to be normal, interacting with Darius about being a doctor and feigning interest his nightclub. It was obvious right away that Darius was a player. Warning signs were going off, and when he got his mysterious text message it told Vincent that he was anything but calm. To think... Heather didn't trust Vincent.

When Cat was given the third degree by Heather and Tess, why didn’t she just say Vincent was in witness protection? Even the police don’t have access to that information unless the party in question decides to tell them. I watched In Plain Sight; I know these things. That was just one more scene that tore the people Cat trusts most further away from her. The worst thing? Her chance to use a great lie like witness protection is gone. Everything that came after has ruined, for the very long term, her chance to bring Vincent into her world.

So, Darius had a short life span. Why did they have to knock Heather out? Vincent killed Darius as Darius sought to save his own ass. Do I think he would have pulled the trigger? Yes. Vincent has a built in lie detector that can read blood pressure and pulse rate and all that jazz. If he didn’t feel she was really in jeopardy, he wouldn’t have done what he did.

But Vincent's beast was just a little stronger than he realized. He didn't mean to kill Darius, only to knock him out of the way. Nobody will know Darius was ready to shoot Heather except Vincent, and he won’t be able to convince anyone otherwise.

The events sure seemed to seal the fate of Cat and Tess, especially since Tess has more loyalty to Joe than she does to Cat. It’s a real shame that she can’t see how similar their situations are. Why she trusts Joe so implicitly while bring a world of hurt on Cat makes no sense to me, but they always seem to make all sorts of sense to the people who are inside of them.

Cat and Vincent are fighting on one side and Tess will be fighting with Joe to take down whoever - or whatever - killed his brother. I have this sinking feeling that the search for the two goons who were really responsible will be forgotten and, with the help of Evan, the search will be increased for the beast.

I loved that Even went to Cat before he made his choice on whether to work with Muirfield. Cat's attention was pulled away by Heather's shenanigans, and that's another moment Cat will never get back. I would love to think that Evan will eventually come to his senses and see the truth about Muirfield, as well as what the close proximity of the beast to Catherine means.

It's easy to follow Evan's logic that he's out to harm her in some way and I can't help but wish his communications with J.T. had been much deeper. That connection would have provided so much insight into the world of the beast for Evan, but that's just one more ship that sailed away this week.

I’m really disappointed in the direction things have taken with Evan, but they have written him into a corner. He’ll have no idea the harm he’s doing until Cat is left half dead and Vincent isn’t there to protect her because Evan has captured him.

For a minute there, it seemed our epic romance was, once again, on hold. Imagine my surprise when Cat carried on with this lovely Beauty and the Beast quote:

Cat: Crazy stuff happens. And, all I want to do is share it with you, figure it out with you. My normal is when I'm with you. I love you. I don't need walls, or doors....
[kiss]
Vincent: I am so in love with you. | permalink

Finally. We got it. The kiss. Followed by a much deeper, soulful, lingering kiss that rolled right into the credits.

The ride just got much rougher for our romantic duo, but Cat is steadfast in her determination to stand by his side. Despite Vincent's weaknesses and low expectations of her longevity, she's not letting him down. What the future holds remains to be seen, but all indications point to a long-term, rocky (and sexy) road.

The only problem I have with this episode--well actually it is some characterizations since the show's start--is how Heather is portrayed and Tess' sudden relationship with Joe. I really enjoy the show but neither Tess nor Heather are fleshed out well. In this episode Heather came across as the typical nosy, annoying younger sister and that is so unfortunate. If more development was given to the character since her introduction to the show, the way she behaved in this episode would have more resonance. She was completely over the top and there was no motivation tied to her reaction. Going to Tess to get a background check??? I get that Tess/Heather were concerned and they care about Catherine but more time is given to Cat/Vincent relationship (which of course should be the case) and that makes their interactions resonate more. Because there isn't enough development of Cat's personal relationship with Tess as well as Heather the "interrogation scene" and every scene with Heather was just so aggrivating. I need to watch the earlier episodes again because the blowout with Heather and Tess seemed to have no emotional basis. Maybe its'just me. Then all of a sudden slam, bam! Tess is in bed with the police lieutenant? Where the hell did that come from? There was no inkling of that in prior episodes so that just seemed tacked on or a plot device. I just wish the writers would tighten up some characterizations and not have characters do and say things for effect.

OKAY EVERYBODY DEEP BREATHS, CALM DOWN. NOW FREAK FRIGGING OUT!!! THAT KISS ( MANY KISSES!!! ) WAS AMAZING!!! OMG OMG OMG!!!! I CANT EVEN HARDLY REMEMBER THE REST OF THE SHOW. I'LL HAVE TO GO BACK AND WATCH IT AGAIN. THE KISSES GAVE ME AMNESIA!!! BUT REALLY BEASTIES THE WRITERS ON THIS SHOW MAKE IT THE MOST REALISTIC SHOW ON TV!!! ITS NOT SO DETAILED AND OVER ANALYZED THAT IT IS UNDER A MICROSCOPE. ITS NOT SO OVER CONTROLED THAT EVERY OUNCE OF REALIZEM IS DRAINED OUT OF THE CHARACTERS. BUT COME ON NOW BEASTIES VINCENT AND CATHERINES LOVE IS SO REAL SO EPIC SO BEAUTIFUL, THAT IT IS BREATHTAKING TO WATCH AND EXPERIENCE!!! I CANT IMAGINE WHAT IT IS LIKE FOR THE ACTORS!!! THEY HAVE TO HAVE THAT CHEMISTRY OFF SCREEN AS WELL. IT CANNOT BE THAT REAL AND BE AN ACT!!! I LOVE THEM!

Heather was a real headache to watch, but I think the actress that portrays her did a great job in making her so unbearable, selfish, blind, stupid and what not. I thought this when I watched the scene in the precinct. She was a totally different thing there, she was so scared, confused, vulnerable, so human.
This is not my kind of show, but I started watching out of curiosity and I haven't been bored for a second. I am not into soapy plots at all -I hate it when they try to pretend it's something else but it's all really just about matching and rematching couples, eeek!-, but this sort of "romantic noir", I just find it very charming. It's overtly about love-against-all-odds, as the original show was, and I think its irresistible! I like the way the plot and the characters have grown up throughout the series, building up the suspense, and now it's all much more complex and there are so many characters facing difficult choices. I think it deserves -as much as we do- one more season. And, btw, I am in the team that can see THE chemistry! ^_^
Thanks Carissa for reviewing!

In response to Gigi's post, what??? People have panned Jay Ryan's portrayal of Vincent?
I think he has the character nailed. It's that vulnerability and everything else about him that makes him so irresistible. Gigi's description of Vincent is bang on, to a T. It's certainly interesting how people can watch the same thing, and see it so differently..Not sure whether its a lack of advertising or what, but a lot of my friends had not even heard of the show, I'm slowing turning them on to it. I bought a season pass so that they can start at the very beginning!

To Carissa: thank you so much for your reviews! I enjoy recapping & reading what other people write back as well. The episode "JB" is referring to with the green small notebook is "Trapped" where Vincent is "put under" by JT in the cage to remember his time in Afghanistan. JT has the notebook now back at the warehouse. That's when JT broke into Evan's lab to make a serum for the "black outs" Vincent was having. It's before "Bridesmaid Up". I don't know what "JB" is looking at, but I think Vincent & Cat have great chemistry together! I did not like him with Alex, forgetting that she was his ex,just didn't see it. My husband didn't care for her either. Cat & Vincent don't have to be in the same profession to have things in common. They are both loving & caring, want to do the right thing in their work & with their friends & family. I'd love to see more flashbacks with Vincent's family. Everyone has their own opinion & this website is for the fans who LOVE the show! We all have that in common!! March 14th can't come soon enough!!

Thanks for your great review, Carissa! This show has truly become my secret guilty pleasure as I can't seem to find any of my friends who are watching it (or admit to it)! Up until now, I have to say the plotline was gettng a little tedious and I was considering tuning out but this was a great mid-season episode that really got things ramping up. I was really mad at how Alex showed up and Vincent seemed to dump Cat like a hot potato and go running off with the former girlfriend. But as he explained somewhat later on, he made that choice to get away from Cat to protect her - like Alex was convenient and a handy second choice. Some reviewers have panned Vincent's performance - wooden, stilted, monotone, but I actually think he portrays the character really well. Hesitant, confused, overly cautious - not sure how to act around people, especially a woman he finds very attractive. The KISS at the end of this episode was really sweet and romantic! At first I had the same impression as another poster that it was too scripted and blocked but upon rewinding it (ahem, several times), it actualy works very well - again the whole cautious, unsure, a little awkward on both their parts, more so for Vincent. At this point in a long simmering attraction, we would expect them to just jump at each other and be very passionate and demonstrative, but instead it was sweet and tentative, like neither one of them knew what to expect. Vincent saying in that sad voice "I am so in love with you" was just heartbreaking. I say good job all around! And yes, if my little sister acted like Heather, she would definately be looking for another roomate and Tess has no business telling anybody who they should be dating!

I loved the end of this episode and find the Catherine/Vincent connection is wonderful - but the first point in your review is the clincher: I can't remember a more unlikeable or obnoxious character than Heather. I'd be happy if they wrote her out sooner rather than later! Just send her off to an amazing job on the other side of the country. At least has occasionally shown some support or humour with her friend/partner. Heather is spoilt, self-centred, immature, brainless and wholly uninteresting. The minutes spent on her in any scene are irritating and a waste of time. Cat/Vincent - A+, JT - A, Evan - B-, Tess - C, and Heather - F!!!

Hi Carissa - I was referring to the boxes that Cat's Dad led her to in the storage room 'behind the wine cabinet'. It had all her mothers notes in it about Vincent which JT described as 'crazy detailed' as well as what looked like profiles on other test subjects and that picture of Cat's mom with two of the other MF dudes. It was the episode where they make the serum to cure Vincent's blackouts, though I can;t recall the title. Marley - See, that is my problem, I don't think they have chemistry at ALL. I think Vincent and Alex had chemistry, and even Cat and Even, but Vincent and Cat always seems so forced and heavy handed. They did a good job in the 'Bridesmaid Up' episode, but that was where it tarted and ended for me.

Beauty and the Beast Season 1 Episode 13 Quotes

Heather: So why did you go back to your ex?
Vincent: Because I'm a complete idiot who was afraid of his extremely intense feelings for your sister.

She recognized you from the wedding. She thinks you're this mysterious ass.
