Rookie Blue Review: Your Shadow Self

at . Comments

According to serial killer Ross Perik's interpretation of psychiatrist Carl Jung's theory, everyone has a shadow self that they hide from the world. Tonight's Rookie Blue was about what happens when you stop hiding.

A Little Bit In Love

Lots of "Skeletons" were pulled out of the closet to see the light of day, but Gail's had the most immediate consequences.

Gail stepped up in a big way. For all of her faults, no one can say a lack of bravery is one of them. She didn't hesitate to go toe to toe and face the man who murdered Jerry and held her captive in order to save a missing girl.

This officer ability to exude sarcasm even while under duress - as seen in this Rookie Blue quote - is one of the reasons why I'll always love her.

Perik: You're taller than I remember.
Gail: Well I guess it's hard to gauge a person's height when they're tied to a table. | permalink

But Perik wanted some deep, dark secret and Gail was willing to share if it meant saving Grace. The shoplifting story was child's play compared to the horror I'm sure she experienced when she accidentally killed the kitten. But it was her confession about cheating on Nick that was the game changer.

When she walked back into the observation room, all Nick needed was one look at her face to know that that story had been true. They say the truth will set you free and I suppose these two are free of one another - but the hollowed out look on their faces was difficult to watch.

Their conversation in the truck was heartbreakingly honest. Nick claimed that when he decided not to come home while undercover, it wasn't because he didn't want to see Gail. But Gail knew what it really meant... that he wanted to be with Andy more.

And finally he admitted it. He has a crush on Andy and he thought it would go away. But it hasn't.

While all of this was unfolding, Steve Peck, Gail's brother (and wasn't it strange that they didn't share a single scene together) babysat Traci. It didn't take her long to figure out he was distracting her with busy work and when she called him on it I was grateful he was so honest.

If Traci had been on the floor during the investigation, her friends and colleagues would have been worried about her and it would have taken their focus off of the job.  When Traci opened up to Steve about how difficult it's been without Jerry, I couldn't stop the tears.

I'm trying so hard to keep going but sometimes, sometimes all I can think about is how much I miss him. | permalink

Traci came to work every day with a smile on her face and a great attitude but inside she's still in pain. Unfortunately, only time will help her heal.

The resurgence of a Ross Perik copy cat churned up memories for everyone. Sam was quick to request Andy as his partner and although the reason he gave for doing so was plausible…

I chose you so we wouldn't have to talk about it. We were partnered that day which means I don't have to explain anything. | permalink

We all know how much Sam loves to talk (and yes, I'm being sarcastic) but I believe he didn't think about choosing Andy at all. It was instinct. A gut call he made when under duress. And Marlo noticed.

The bigger problem I had was how Sam treated Andy. I know he was upset. Jerry was his best friend. But it just hearkened back to how he behaved toward her after Jerry died and thankfully Andy called him on it.

You don't want to talk, we don't have to. Stop treating me like your personal punching bag. Please. | permalink

Other moments of interest included:

  • Chloe and Marlo being paired together. That's a partnership I never saw working but surprisingly enjoyed.
  • Luke returned and it was great to have him back. I especially liked the way he believed in and backed up Gail.
  • Dov was reeling over Chris leaving without a goodbye. I know Chris didn't want a big scene but I think he owed his best friend a proper farewell.
  • Shaw filed for divorce from Zoe. This has been a long time coming but it still hurt. Hopefully Oliver can move forward and find some happiness.

So now that Nick's a free man will he pursue Andy? Will Luke and Gail bond over her ordeal? And is there any hope for Sam and Andy? Rookie Blue fans, tell me what you think.

Great episode, I just don't like the way they are portraying Andy.....three guys from the same division??? And how about Gail and their friendship. I hope at the end of the season Andy is back with Sam. I just love them together.

I would liked a pairing with Andy and Nick. I think they fit together!
And Tracy has to move on. Maybe with Steve!
Chloe and Dov are great together too.!
Gail could be a good match for Luke. And Chris? Do you think he is coming back?

Another breakup in the rain,in a parking lot.The writers sure are pushing Nick on us.Loved Gail doing what she had to even if it messed up her life. Everyone did a great job as usual. I will always be a McSwarek shipper and always have a very soft spot for Sam, I really understand this kind of guy.I hope he comes to terms with all the sadness in his life. I know there will be a McCollins, never thought they would but Andy with three guys from the same division, but the writers will make sure of that and many McSwarek people will change alligence, and Sam will be like Luke and in season 5 will only be in a few episodes.
So sad !

Nick and Gail, what a relationship. So Gail makes plans to go to France when she is suspended and probably going to lose her badge. She doesn't talk to Nick about it beforehand and Nick figures he is about to get hurt and takes off to UC to avoid it all. Falls for Andy who is open and honest and doesn't push people away all the time like Gail does but who is also still heartbroken over Sam. Nick comes back realizes how much he cares about Gail and tries to make an honest go of it all the while having feelings for Andy but pushing them aside. Gail discovers Nick's feelings, is crushed and cheats on him. Honestly if they both stopped running away from one another they would have saved themselves so much pain.

I think all this switching partners and declaring "soul mates" way too much and too often, that's including Traci. Another thing has me worried, Eric Johnson (Luke) is so thin, has he been sick?

I don't know. I've been rooting for Sam and Andy since the very beginning but this season is just making me want Nick and Andy! I know Sam/Andy are probably endgame but I think Andy deserves some happiness and I hope she finds that with Nick. I gotta say I've never changed ships like this before!

I love this show, it is one of the best on tv. It is hard to believe the show can keep getting better and better but it does.
We all knew Gail cheated. Nick was so hurt when he heard that, the scene with them in the car was heart breaking. I knew Nick had a crush on Andy since day one and I said it last week. However I knew he would never cheat on Gail.
You can tell that Gail's brother will be a new love interest for Tracy.
I really like the Dov/Oliver, Nick/Andy and Chole/Marlo pairings.
I felt bad for Oliver when he told Dov he filed for divorce.
I am looking forward to next week.

I liked Frank at the end being there for the father of the missing girl, who initially due to the short period of time that she had been missing no one was going to be looking for her. I think that Frank was able to put himself in his shoes as he now has a daughter as well. Nick and Gail, he may not had cheated with Andy, but wanting to spend time with another woman, is not good, and grounds for a long term relationship.

I liked the eps. In it are manifest Sam's feelings towards Andy. The chosen at a time so painful for him. Cover needs her back. The destrata by their emotional state. But fundamentally apologizes, acknowledging his mistake. You need to have around. That's McSwarek. Even if it is only a moment, we know that behind that mask, and Sam's misconduct in the remaining eps. there it is, begins to appear.

What I really didn't like was the obvious lack of Sam being a friend to Oliver. Maybe he shouldn't be so focused on himself and be there for his friends. That might actually help him more than always spending time with his new girl.
