In case there's a season 3, just a few notes about one of the LA Complex story lines. If/when Tariq's back in the show, how will they maneuver him into the storyline? I hope the focal point of the writers will not be to involve Tariq in a long interracial gay affair. We've been there enough already (Six Feet Under, Will & Grace, True Blood, etc.). It's time for an ethnic black "manly man" gay relationship on a major Network show like the one with Kal/tariq. A concept that has meet its time. Giving many young black gay men a signpost by which they can see how this type of relationship really works. Not to digress, but I thought this show was centered around struggling, aspiring artist living at the Delux. Kaldrick, an already superstar, never lived there, Tariq did. I understand why they focused so much on Kaldrick's story in season 2, and I loved his redemptive story, but now I'd like to see Tariq's.I wish someone would start a Kal/Tariq blog where we can continue to comment, discuss, create scenarios etc. about the K/T story line. This would give us K/T junkies somewhere to go and help us survive the between seasons anxiety.
It was my understanding that the premise for the LA Complex was to develop story arcs of struggling actors/musicians, producers/directors, who come to LA, trying to "MAKE IT" in their professional as well as private lives. Well, looking at the story arcs of the African American characters, who happen to be "gay", their stories seem to be undevelop/incomplete. There's one character (Kaldric) who was already a famous "Rap" star who went to prison for a year and is now trying to regain his position as "King of Cally." Another (Tariq), who comes to LA aspiring to become a music producer. He gets a physical and emotional "beat down"; goes back home (Canada) and seemly forgets about his aspirations. So, are their stories to end like this, what's up with that. There are "Gay" people in every profession so this can't be the end of their story. Come on, show us how their, as well as the other characters, journeys develop/end with a season 3,4 or whatever it takes.
The segment of the LA Complex dealing with young black men meandering their way through the sordid world of the HipHop/Rap music industry is akind to real life. An industry where battles, haterd, jealousy, backstabing, and sometimes murder are commonplace is intriquing to say the least. Now add closeted/open SGL, self-haterd, attempted suicide, black gay culture, the Kal/Tariq love affair (my hooked on part) into the mix, well you can't get anymore COMPLEX than this.Episode 13 was extremly moving. Yes, I cried and I,m not ashamed.Althoug Kal didn't have the chance to tell his father who he really is, whose to say he didn't already know.Kal seems to be on the road to redemption. Learning to love himself and unabashedly declaring who he is. Those written words of his are both healing and freeing. Its like he's been waiting so long to exhale and/so finally, HE DID. Maybe seeing this gives other young gay men courage to do the same. Kal was "killing me softly" with his words and Andra Fuller with his performance. We got to have a season 3. What do you say?
We have been following the lives of two aspiring young African American men, who happen to be "gay",trying to elevate themselves in the "dog eat dog" world of the Hip Hop music industry. We'er following Kaldric/Sean's tumultuous journey and it appears as though its headed toward a more positive, life affirming place. Now, I would like to learn more about how Tariq has/will overcome, if you will, the adverse aspects that have clouded his view of what life has thrown at him. How does he survive? Will he and Kal reunite? Will there be motivation/encourgment in this storyline for other young black men, gay or not, who have aspirations for the music entertainment industry? Maybe we'll find out in the finale episodes or if/when there's a season 3. Let's hope.
Kal seems to be losing control right about now. There's gonna be an emotional disconnect with whoever he reaches out to. And besides, HE'S BREAKING ALL THE RULES. But enough about Kal for now... How IS Tariq doing? I bet you he's not hiding under a rock. He's been abused by his lover and he's hurting. He's an unabashedly black/gay man who as embraced his sexuality and seems to be comfortable in his own skin. So, maybe he will begin to feel SOMETHING for someone else. I'm just sayin'. What do you think?
Andra Fuller and Benjamin Watson are doing an excellent job living out the lives of their charaters. For most African American DL men and many DL men of color, displaying the EPITOME OF MASCULINITY is the facade behind which they LIVE/HIDE. Emasculation (being called a fagg...) is their "VALLEY OF THE SHADOW OF DEATH" for which they are in constant fear. Being loved is their salvation. The writers of the LA Complex Kal and Tariq storyline seem to understand this truth very well. Thank You.
