Hi everybody, My name is Niek Melchers (23), I'm a MA student at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and writing my master thesis on Glee. I'm a huge Glee fan and this seemed like a good way to end my academic career. My main interest is why the show has been so popular among American adults (18+). As I'm doing an analysis of the show (focusing on it's portayal of adults and the nostalgia which prevails them), I also intended to do a reception analysis among adult fans. This is the reason why i'm posting this on the forum. The research consists of fairly simple open questions about Glee (see below) and the relationship of adults (you) with the show. The questions could be answered as elaborate as you'd like (the more the better) and you'll be a part of (for as far as I know) the first academic research on Glee. The reason why the research focuses on American adults only is because of their recognizability with this type of high school culture, which is different from the one in Europe. 1. Introduction Your age? Do you watch a lot of television (if so, what do you watch)? With whom do you watch Glee when it is on television? 2. Glee (General) Why do you like Glee? How would you describe the show? How was your own high school life in comparison to Glee (was it similar, different, if so, in what way)? Are there any reasons why you could not like Glee? What makes Glee different from other 'teen' series (or what makes it stand out)? 3. Glee (content) Do you recognize yourself in a certain character in Glee (if so, which one and why)? How would you describe the way by which adults are portrayed in the series? How would you describe the role that music plays in Glee? 4. Closing How applicable is the Glee-theme "we're all losers" to real life? Do you have anything to add to these questions? The information you give will only be used for my research at the University of Amsterdam, and nothing else. Unfortunately the thesis will be written in Dutch, but if you still want to read the end result, I can always send it to you (it will have an English summary). Anyone who isn't 18+ could help me out too, by simply answering the question: Why do you think adults like Glee so much? Many thanks for your time (and effort). With kind regards, Niek Melchers ps. You can answer the questions right here on the forum, but if you want to elaborate more you can send me a text document with the questions and your answers to my e-mail: Niek.Melchers@student.uva.nl

Hold up, this is the right post, sorry for the first one!

    Hi everybody,

My name is Niek Melchers (23), I'm a MA student at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and writing my master thesis on Glee.

    1. Introduction

    Your age?

Do you watch a lot of television (if so, what do you watch)?

With whom do you watch Glee when it is on television?

    2. Glee (General)

    Why do you like Glee?

    With kind regards,

    Niek Melchers

I'm not an adult, so I guess I'll answer this:

Anyone who isn't 18+ could help me out too, by simply answering the question: Why do you think adults like Glee so much?

Hm, various reasons. Chorus, show choir or drama teachers may like it because it's applicable to their teaching life. Some adults like it for the great LGBT visibility (Kurt, Santana, Blaine, Brittany, etc.). Some like and watch it because they're really attached to the fandom. Some like it because they watch it with their kids, and become attached to the characters and storylines themselves. Just my guesses :D

But to be completely honest, not many people are on this forum. If you haven't already, I suggest this forum to post this survey:

    www.gleeforum.com

There's way, way more people there. Good luck! :)
