If we apply this logic, one must wonder why did Blair keeps dating Dan if she loves Chuck so much and even more day by day?
Sometimes, I think people have some reasons for dating other people even though they are in love with someone else. I think Serena went to the "what if" road because she really felt sorry for Ben and what he went through and she wondered if maybe Ben was the one and tried to see that. But she soon realized he wasn't and probably took her time to analyze her past relationships and figured out Dan is her true love.

Cris is right. In real life people dick around and date this person and that person while being in love with another. It's complex, and often we can't explain it, and tbh I know personally I look back and just think 'why the fuck did I do that?'
