I don't understand why you would think S1 delena made any sense at all. Are you fucked in the head as well? Why would you want a guy be with a girl who practically killed the girl's biological mum after banging her and used her best friend as a walking blood bag and a blowup doll.
Because we could seriously see him being affected by her in S1.
He was a bastard and an evil morally conflicted anti-hero, but every time Elena would come, something would just snap in him and you would see parts of human, happy damon in there
Back then Elena was also not yet written as flawless mary sue bella swan, so with assumption she is a flawed character, one could see a certain level of bonding between the two , with each of them revealing different sides of themselves.
The problem with DE is that writing surrounding Elena in S2(as well as what Damon did then) made it IMPOSSIBLE to ship them since S2.
Flawed-guilt-trip-elena-gilbert-with-darker-sides can be shipped with morally-conflicted-antihero-damon, but flawless-caring-mary-sue-of-holy-good-intentions-Elena-Gilbert CAN NOT be shipped with jerk-crybaby-bipolar-damon.

There was progression of their relationship in S1, a bond forming, a level of trust increasing, a strange sense of understanding and protecting each other appearing, not to mention certain character similarities.
it all got thrown out of the window in S2.
Season two of TVD is TVD's "hotel plot".

LOLOLOLing. Kitty does make strong points but its just so hard for me to go back to imagining how awesome they COULD HAVE BEEN and how much POTENTIAL there was before Plec did her thing. ItS absolutely ridiculous to think about them as a couple NOW but back then in S1.....i could see it. Hell i might have even shipped it..............MIGHT!!!
